Anyone use an anemometer?

I prefer the Windy app set at 100m altitude.

I’ve got one of these and use it in conjunction with UAV Forecast.

As @macspite says, it’s ok at ground level which just gives an indication if it’s ok to TO but unless you’re flying at that level rendered useless 10ft up

ok thanks, so i think maybe i will pass on that them

Yeah I felt it was a necessity but in reality out of 30 flights, probably used it twice. But I mean it’s only a tenner so not the worst thing to have in your pocket

On a hill it’s often the other way round - a 20mph wind on the ridge may be 15mph hundred foot up. As the wind gets compressed when it hits the slope.

Me too, but hardly use it. As has been said it’s only giving you the wind speed at ground level.

I use an Android app, very rarely. Zephyrus, uses the phone’s mic to guesstimate wind speed.

Hand held anemom always used on aircraft carriers years ago for free take off aircraft as opposed to catapault launches.
Needed a windspeed over the deck minimum of 32 mph for free t/o…
Airport windsocks if blown out to a 45 degree angle usually shows 30ph wind (at the windsock). (Roughly).

I use to teach sailing at Cowes where we had a f3 windsock - fully blown indicated an f3, 45 degrees - F2 and just dangling with some movement - f1

This one you got from DJI?

I find if my cap blows off its too windy!

But seriously I use a Kestrel 1000 for ground speed measurements. Pretty accurate and sort of ties in with drone high wind warnings when close to limit and low level flight.

If its close to limit at ground level , i generally don’t fly.

I have one of those Amgaze ones, it lives in the drone rucksack. Only used it a couple of tome, bit it’s been handy for such occasions. Probably of limited use in many places but up on an exposed hilltop or headland is useful!

I used the very useful Wet Finger App

The free version allows one free lick at any location but for a very reasonable £1.99 you can get multiple licks in any location

My wife has gone for a paid version, strange as she doesn’t even have a drone

I’m thinking of getting one just to confirm my grumpy moans at the f’ing forecast as in ā€œfeels more than bloody 12knts to me, and it’s ruddy freezingā€.:grinning_cat_with_smiling_eyes:

When I remember I’ve got it installed, I also use the Weather Station app (Android) which shows details from personal weather stations. Don’t need to own a station to use it. Data includes wind & gust speeds and there’s likely to be one near you.

I use one of these…
