Very, very much looking forward to being over in your fine country starting this Sunday - been too long, and first time bringing the camera gear and drone.
I’ve got all my ducks in a row - which I believe roughly translates to ‘I’ve done all the locks of my flock on the edge of the loch’ in the foreign tongue you wonderful people speak (also, can I expect there to be some people in Scotland who speak English to help me translate from English to Scottish?)(That’s a joke I make to my Dundee-born mother, dont kill me!)
The planning that’s done primarily has to do with registration, airspace maps to compare against each other, insurance, the things like pdf of the CAA regulations saved. The last bits of uncertainty are to do with takeoff/vicinity (outside of 50m) of flights near Historic Scotland/NTS properties, which are obviously major attractions, and this I’d normally address flying near big properties in the States by determining land owner.
Now it’s my understanding that in Scotland, you generally don’t need landowner permission - a very helpful gentleman (who I’d guess uses or has used this site?) has been answering some questions I had. But even with that, I do like to be overly-cautious and at least, if possible, know who I would contact. Is there an iOS app that can display ownership of land you drop a pin on?
Alternatively, is there an iOS way to view the (somewhat convoluted) map here in an iOS app that anyone is aware of, as that’s a page that HiddenScotland has led me to believe I should be able to see the NTS properties in a all in one image.
That is EXACTLY what I was looking for - shame it’s not an app, but all that info in one place combined with the recs from users of this site - somehow I had missed that, I registered for dronescene but I didn’t realize it had all those things for a Small brain moment on my part, but a big thank you sir, that’s huge. Or as the mango Mussolini (the American Boris) would say, “UUUUUGE.”
First off there are “core paths” They are all maintained and kept open for the public as rights of way.
You can pretty much go anywhere under the right to roam, BUT, there are some exclusions and rules you must follow. Most people seem to think right to roam is the right to do whatever you please, and that is not the case!
I’ll dig out some more links for you. But for now I will say “Do not ask permission from SNH, National Trust, HES etc” Trust me, they will say no everytime!!!
Some sites are not monitored and you can TOAL from their ground, Balvaird Castle is one of these. Others you will need to find public ground for TOAL. Most, if asked politely, will email you a map of their boundary
Forestry and Land Scotland also “allow” use of drones on all the land they manage. As long as you are compliant with the drone code.
Post in here where you intend to visit and fly. We can help with TOAL spots, where to park etc
