Gathering footage for an event last night.
Not only did i have 20mph gusts to contend with, the seagulls showed an interest.
Just after take off they showed up and flew round the drone for about 20 seconds, then backed off for a bit. They came back later when i went to the other end of the beach for about 20 seconds again.
Yeah, they’ve been bugging me this morning too… but I do like them gliding in and out of your video. I think they add to it really nicely
To be honest I don’t get bothered by seagulls, in fact very rarely.
As a coastal flyer it’s the Oystercatchers who are a more dangerous threat. They will try any means to bring a drone down!
Big problem?, more an occupational hazard.
You wouldn’t swim where crocs and great whites inhabit
Put some red tape on your drone,I’ve heard numerous times this works but haven’t tried it myself yet.
Doesn’t always work, I know that for a fact!
I was ambushed by a flock of Oystercatchers when I applied such tape to my drone, they didn’t give a flying feck what colour it was.
At least oystercatchers are predictable, they will always attack and always be mob-handed. Lost my Mini 2SE last year to a mob attack by lesser black-backed gulls, but no idea what triggered the aggression. I have encountered gulls on almost all of my flights locally before and since and they have ignored my drone.
Nesting/breeding season is starting and they can be territorial and aggressive to anything they think could be a predator, so you are right to be wary of them. My attack was a full month after the end of breeding season, though, and my best explanation is that they were a group of juveniles being delinquent and showing off to each other. Their determination was total; Airdata records hit after hit and they followed the drone down to the water to be certain they’d killed it. Then the bastards flew over to me and laughed at me.
If you get into trouble, apparently the standard advice is to go into sport mode and climb vertically upwards full throttle; birds cannot match your rate of vertical ascent. Once clear, you can get tf outta Dodge…
Not entirely true… This is from my many experiences with them that you can encounter a bird on its own who will alert the others with their high pitched alarm call. Once that happens then it’s time to consider returning to home until the threat has passed.
Ahh you were unlucky to run into a flock of colour blind oystercatchers.
Maybe hang a chip on a bit of string beneath the drone to distract them?
That sounds more like encouraging the ‘stards!
Nah definitely a distraction - when they fly in for the attack they’ll see the chip and go for that instead of the drone itself
Think I’d want to turn the wipers on, and the washers!
I live by the coast so I’ll give that a try, that’s the great thing about this club, every day’s a school day.
That’s Steve’s go too video
I use red reflect to tape, it keeps him away
I hope there’s too much salt and not enough vinegar on it… Plus I’m not happy about the potential of what he could do in that Hobgoblin!
