Avebury Stone Circle

Avebury’s henge and stone circles is one of the greatest remaining prehistoric sites in Britain. It’s been one of my favourite places to photograph over the years, and in keeping with a number of other locations from my earth-bound photography, its now getting the drone treatment.

Built and much altered during the Neolithic period, roughly between 2850 BC and 2200 BC, the henge survives as a huge circular bank and ditch, encircling an area that includes part of Avebury village. Within the henge is the largest stone circle in Britain - originally of about 100 stones - which in turn encloses two smaller stone circles.

Avebury is part of an extraordinary set of Neolithic and Bronze Age ceremonial sites that seemingly formed a vast sacred landscape and only a 25 mile drive from the more well known site at Stonehenge

Great photos of an amazing location.

Everytime I see or drive through Avebury, I think of a creepy kids TV show from the late 70s ‘Children of the Stones’. It was filmed there, and I don’t know if it’s really true, but theres a great story from when it was filmed. The crew used some fake stones during filming, and at some point, a Dutch lady got into shot, and when they asked her to move back, she leaned against one of the fake stones which promptly fell over, almost giving her a heart attack!

Watch out for paragliders. I landed in the circle on mine on one occasion.
