Bird Near Miss - Ness Battery, Orkney - DJI MINI3 Pro 4K

Almost got taken out during the first flying day on Orkney by this Oystercatcher, right after I captured the MV Hamnavoe.

This was one reason I was soo worried abtou bird attack during the rest of my holiday - out of 22 flights we were attacked / seen off twice, this was the closest call…

I used to play golf there! It’s been a long time easily30 years since I’ve been on Orkney, I lived there growing up so your video brings back a few memories. Birds are abundant up there and are especially aggressive when defending their nests, just take a walk along the cliffs at Yesnaby or Marwick head during breeding season and you’ll know what I’m talking about

Yup, I had a walk along Yesnaby and got a flight in there - about 2 or 3 hrs after this - which is why I kept at a good altitude on the Yesnaby flight and for most of the rest of the holiday…

Glad the video brought back memories

Not quite as close but again came from nowhere

Still scarey, and a Buzzard is a lot bigger than an Oystercatcher…

Big enemy the Oyster Catchers! I was flying in the Woodbridge area at Dock Lane, Melton and I’m certain one them came for me from the other side of the estuary (a quarter of a mile away)! I’d been in the area for over half an hour and had seen nothing of concern. Once I saw an OC I landed and packed up, I’d had issues in the area before with persistent OCs.

It was a young one, more curious than anything else, i think. But agree, no match for a Mavic Mini.

I hate them little pests, the only 2 bird attacks I have had have been them, I was, advised to fly up as fast as I could, I did this the 2nd time, and the little pest just circled up to the drone, and renewed it’s attack

Yup, I had heard they were persistent, hence I climbed and bugged out, only way to be sure…

As much as I hate Oystercatchers and any form of marine birdlife, given I’m a coastal flyer. We have to remember at the end of the day we are invading their natural flying environment.

They are all still devious bastards though. :joy:

Yup, hence I would rather leave than potentially injure the bird or damage the drone

The 2 encounters I have had with the little twats have been in my hometown which 35 or so miles inland, as soon as I hear there sqwaking on come the end of May my heart sinks, roll on September and they will be off
