Broch of Gurness, Iron Age Orkney - Added to Iconic Landscapes and Ancient Sites in Scotland

I have just added this to the map of places to fly your drone at Drone Scene:

Land owner permission requirements unknown.

A wonderful open site, which is run by Historic Scotland, so flying out of hours - or when it is closed - and TOAL off their land. Good free car park that will afford a good TOAL spot, and can easily keep VLOS to the site as it is quite close to the car park.

Can be windy - we had 20-25mph gusts which made the MINI3 Pro bounce a bit, but once moving it is ok.

The originator declared that this location was not inside a Flight Restriction Zone at the time of being flown on 28/06/2023. It remains the responsibility of any pilot to check for any changes before flying at the same location.

I want to fly here @AlbionDrones, I’ve added it to the list of places I want to fly

I’ve just added a new Take Off And Landing marker to this location @AlbionDrones :slightly_smiling_face:

I flew here in May of 2024. I was on one of those all day tours, and this was one of the stops. Our tour guide got me special permission to TOAL within the grounds (right next to the check in building) as it was pretty much closing time and only a couple other people were there.

I think my guide felt guilty that other spots I wanted to fly from (Yesnaby, Skara Brae) we weren’t there long enough for me to make it worthwhile (I later went back to Skara Brae myself after hours).

I’d recommend visiting out of hours on most of the sites up. Lots of locals do simply to avoid the crowds from those infernal floating council estates.
