Cant format card to FAT32, Is this a Windows 11 thing

Hi Folks. I don’t know if anyone else has encountered this. I just went to format my memory card on my PC for my Holy Stone HS720E and noticed that Windows 11 didn’t offer me the FAT32 recommended option, the nearest was exFAT. I tried that and it didn’t work so I popped the card in the drone and formatted it perfectly with the Ophelia Go app. I checked it on my PC and it was formatted to FAT32. There is a video link on YouTube for the HS720E and it states that you should use exFAT but it wouldn’t work on mine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ylHxxRSGQ0 . I just wondered if it is a Windows 11 Thing I am running version 23H2 build 22631.3155 and the card is a 128Gb SanDisk Ultra U3 class 10

It does with my Windows 11 PC :man_shrugging:

If the card is larger than 32GB you cant format to Fat32

Hi as far as i know FAT32 is only support to the max sd card size of 32gb, anything bigger you cant do fat 32, Due to the limitation of FAT32, the Windows system doesn’t support creating a FAT32 partition on a more than 32GB disk partition

@spary thank you for info, mine is 128Gb but formats fine with the Ophelia Go app, so no problem

Glad you sorted it :+1:

Some things will format a 64GB, and larger, to FAT32, but you may only have a 32GB capacity. Worth checking.

Search for a Windows program called guiformat.exe, I know it correctly formats 64GB to full capacity, and might go larger (never needed).

Quick search if not listed
Step 1: Use WIN + X to open Power Menu and select Command Prompt with admin permission. Make sure to note the drive letter. Step 2: Once the command prompt opens, type format /FS:FAT32 and press the Enter key. Step 3: It should now display the operation result, and the drive should be ready to

@OzoneVibe and @Alick thanks guys, all sorted thanks, I didn’t know there was an upper limit for FAT32 just using Windows explorer, but it is far easier now just to use the drones Ophelia Go app.

@robertspark Thanks Rob, it is easier just to use the Ophelia Go app

Mine is 128Gb as I said, but all sorted thanks

Personally, I’d be far more worried about anything that has a spec that’s expecting 128GB at FAT32 SD cards

The FAT32 spec is most certainly very non-standard over 32GB.

The good old manual :grinning: states it is any size card UP to 128Gb so I guess a drone app only has one format option and it works, AFAIK FAT32 is an older file system replaced by exFat as it saves space, I just had a spare SD card of 128Gb lying about, so I put it in the PC to format it, if I had just used the app in the first place I would never have known any difference. The only thing was it had to be Class 10 U3 after spending 30+ years in photography I have a few of them lying around, although when I started it was all Black and White film

Just bought another 128Gb SanDisk Extreme Pro U3 class 10, I put it in the computer just to see what it was formatted as from the Manufacturer and it was FAT32 !!

Its a Myth the 32GB limit!

All I know is if I use the PC for a 128GB card it will only offer me exFAT or NTFS if I try a 32GB card in the PC it offers me the FAT32 option as well, hence the app uses FAT32 just as the manual states. Myth or not, that how my PC is and at the end of the day on a 128Gb card it really makes little odds as I am hardly going to run out of room
