Cauldron Lowe Cement Works

High on the Staffordshire Moorlands lies Cauldon Lowe — home to one of the UK’s most important cement works. Owned by Holcim, the site produces almost a million tonnes of cement each year, its raw materials drawn directly from the vast limestone and shale quarries beside it.

Alongside the cement works, a new asphalt plant, installed in 2024, now supplies essential material for roads and infrastructure across the region.

This landscape is steeped in history. In the 1930s, the LMS railway company operated a major quarry here, building its own railway line to reach the stone. By 1957, Cauldon became the site of Britain’s very first dry process cement plant, setting a benchmark for the industry.

Today, the works continue to evolve — blending tradition with innovation. Alternative fuels reduce CO₂ emissions, while links with the local community remain strong through open days, school visits, and support for local projects.

From quarry to kiln, asphalt to infrastructure, Cauldon Lowe remains at the heart of Staffordshire’s industrial landscape.
