Celtic knot pen

Been planning to try this for years and finally got around to setting up a few jigs on the chop saw to do so.
This one is made from Ash and reclaimed mahogany.
Next one will have mahogany and iroko inserts to show how the ‘rope’ appears to go over and under each other.

Been called worse! LOL

Just completed test number 2 using mahogany and opepe for the ‘knot’.
I like this a lot and in future will be using contrasting woods when making the Celtic knot pens.

How did you do the inlay @Straze ?

Funny you should ask that as everyone who seen the pen today thinks it’s an inlay but it’s actually 4 separate saw cuts almost right through the pen blank and the contrasting wood glued into the saw cut.
Cut and glue one side then turn the blank once cut an glue again and so on until all four side are done.
Quite time consuming but worth the effort.
I’ve been using super glue, as apposed to wood glue, to speed things up but the down side is gluing my fingers to almost everything else! LOL

Come on Kevin @Straze

You know the laws of the internet…

Photos, or it’s an inlay and not cut at all

You asked for it! :grinning:
Jig on mitre saw.

Oak test blank cut almost through.

Mahogany inserts.

All four sides cut and glued ready for the lathe.

Got it weighed off now I think.
Not sure if two knots on one fountain pen is too much or not! What do you think?

At least you’ll always know which pen the lid goes with.

Been making a few of the Celtic knot pens again this week. The fountain pen is made from local Ash, Mahogany from a Devonport Dockyard tug and Opepe offcut from a Trawlers new deck at work. The ball point pen is made of Oak from the old sailing ship ‘Phoenix’ and Traffolyte material. Tall Ship Phoenix For Sale | Wooden Ships Classic Yacht Brokers

I do occasionally sell them but mostly give them away as gifts to friends and family…

Amazing

I’ll contact you via pm if that is ok? I wouldn’t mind one or two of them.

That’s fine by me. Special price for group members?
