In the countryside near Chester-le-Street stands Chester Burn Viaduct, an impressive piece of railway engineering and an important reminder of the region’s industrial and railway heritage. The viaduct carries the railway high above the surrounding landscape and has been a striking feature of the area for generations.
Built during the 19th century, the viaduct formed part of the expanding railway network that connected communities across the North East. Its substantial brick arches were designed to carry railway lines safely across the Chester Burn valley, demonstrating the scale and engineering ambition of Victorian railway construction.
The viaduct remains an active part of the railway network today, with modern trains travelling across a structure that dates back to the early days of railway expansion. From the air, its long row of arches and position within the surrounding countryside can be clearly appreciated.
