Class D Airspace - Drone Assist App

Hi folks,

Newbie here so forgive my ignorance.

I’ve just gotten myself a DJI Mini 4 Pro and after a wee maiden flight, and the finding out about airspace restrictions I believe I’m ok to fly outwith upper & Class D Airspace without permission.

My problem is I’m using the Drone Assist app by Altitude angel and there isn’t a filter for Class D airspace, there is one for regulated lower, is this the filter I’m looking for?

The DJI app only has it as an orange zone for enhanced warning.

For reference I’m looking to fly (initially whilst I learn how to properly control the aircraft) over Cumbernauld, outside Glasgow in Scotland.

There is a small airport which causes a red circle over pretty much all of Cumbernauld, this red circle disappears if I remove “regulated lower”.

Thanks for any advice.

We use our own called Drone Scene

This one?

You have read the Drone code and got your operator ID

You will need permission from Cumbernauld ATC to fly in their FRZ, though they are usually very good to deal with.

Thanks for the reply, yes, I have my operator ID and have read the drone code, I even did the test. I was using the Drone Scene but it didnt display the zones at all (just realised I need to upgrade to see the overlays). This is why I was getting confused about whether I could or could not fly.

I emailed cumbernauld airport last night asking about the process for seeking permission.

When I got the drone 10 days ago, I took it up to a park nearby and flew it about until the battery was low, I obviously didnt realise there was an FRZ there, the DJI app just said it was an enhanced warning zone (I now know not to just trust the DJI app). How do they police these zones?

Most, if not all, airports have drone detection equipment, a fixed antenna array on the roof of one of their buildings.

This will be used to read the DroneID (not to be confused with Remote ID) that your DJI drone is transmitting. This is the unique serial number of your drone and is the serial number you used to activate the drone with DJI and link it to your personal account (so they know who you are).

Along with the serial number, your drone will also be transmitting the location of the operator (ie. where you’re stood), the location of the drone, the speed, direction, altitude and a bunch of other data, all in real-time.

It has a detection range of around 10km.

OK, thanks. Should I be expecting a knock on the door for my initial flight?

There’s nothing in the national media about them closing the airport so you’ll probably be ok

Send them your Operator ID details

Insurance is also available from Grey Arrows Drone Club, and membership will also grant you full access to Drone Scene at the same time:

Thanks.

Its pretty typical, I buy the thing and cant fly it locally. The airport told me this morning i need proof of insurance and a CAA license, which according to the CAA I don’t need as its for personal use.

Cool. Ill look into that.
Thanks

It will also give you access to all the layers in Drone Scene, and other benefits. :+1:

I’ve had permission from Cumbernauld ATC several times as I work at some of the wedding venues in the area. In the past you always needed a police incident number first before an airport ATC would even consider your request to fly, but someone on here recently said they got permission from Cumbernauld without a police incident number.

You must have missed section 7 :face_with_peeking_eye:

Hopefully, they won’t come looking for you

Let us know if they do :grinning:

No, I did read that bit. I purposely flew the drone in a big empty clearing in a big field which was completely empty in part of a local big public park.

No buildings or people within 50m of where I was flying and I kept below the 120m limit as well (didnt want my wee girl flying too high or far away in case I lost her !)

The only warning via the DJI Fly app on the controller was the orange / yellow enhanced one as people may be about, absdolutely nothing about the airport, so I figured it was far enough away to not be a problem.

It wasn’t until yesterday I realised how shite that app is and discovered the FRZ in the Drone Assist app, then I was confused about the app from this site as I hadnt realised it required membership to unlock the layers, hence my post today

But less shite than a few months ago when it wouldn’t let you fly where there were no restrictions without leaping through unnecessary hoops.

They replied to me stating I needed proof of CAA license (which I will use my Flyer ID, they confirmed that was OK in a follow up email), insurance (which I would have if I sign up here) as well a a google map of where I want to fly with the date and time. No mention of police report.

There’s plenty of places outwith the FRZ locally I can still fly at, so I will.

It wasn’t that long ago that a DJI drone wouldn’t take off in a FRZ without an unlock code
That changed when DJI removed its not-very-accurate NFZ geo zones and instead changed them to enhanced zones that require an input to take responsibility for the flight

Yeah, I heard about that…
