Confused.com ( Regarding 1 to 1 rule A2 CofC )

Can someone clarify a question for me as Inam confused. I have been doing so mock A2
C of C questions and this one is confusing me.

If you are flying your UAS at 60m above the surface how far away from uninvolved people must your UAS be?
The correct answer is 60m ( ie the 1:1 rule)

Yet in the study it says

  • In the A2 Subcategory
    • Flying weight of 2kg or less
    • Must not be flown closer than 50m laterally to uninvolved people

To me the key is the word Must not as opposed to the wording of the 1:1 rule which say ‘as a general rule’
What am I missing?

Thank you for your help!

It’s probably all ready on here somewhere regarding the 1 to 1 rule but maybe this will give you a better understanding,

Here

Think it’s based on the drone being over 2kg?

It’s not.

In A2, for legacy drones, 50m is the minimum legal distance you can be from uninvolved people when in flight.

As you ascend, and pass 50m above ground the ‘1:1 rule’ encourages you to move further than 50m away from uninvolved people, in line with your altitude. So e.g. if you were at 100m altitude, ideally you should position your aircraft at least 100m away from uninvolved people. Flying that way would provide a safety buffer should something go wrong.

Thanks for your reply, Inunderstand the 1:1 rule but the learning still qoutes 50m no nearer so the min distance is 50m yet if you apply the 1:1 rule it could be anything 50+ depending on the height of the drone, in the question the height was 60m so the answer was 60m , it doesn’t make sense to me

@X Good explanation of the rule. Nice one. :+1:

:100: and thank you for explaining which makes perfect sense, but the 1:1 rule says that and the guidance in https://uavacademy.co.uk say 50m which is why I’m confused?

the A2 Subcategory

  • Flying weight of 2kg or less
  • Must not be flown closer than 50m laterally to uninvolved people

The mock question
If you are flying your UAS at 60m above the surface how far away from uninvolved people must your UAS be?

At least 60m

Try flipping the limits to:

Below a height of 50m you must stay 50m away laterally
Above 50m you should stay, at least, your current height away laterally.

So, 60m > 50m so you should keep 60m away!

With a drone flying at 60m elevation how many people can tell the difference between 50m and 60m distance?

Why over think it? Most people around you don’t know the rules or regs, and if they moaned, who’s going to be able to measure the distances? Unless you’re a maths genius and can calculate some obscure trig figures to work out a 3D problem, just guess the distance and carry on doing what you were doing.
Do the A2, and if Karen or Ken complains, show them that you’ve attained the level of competence that the regs ask for, and tell them to sod off (nicely of course!) or you’ll call the police.

In any event it is intentionally fly over.

If someone suddenly appears or maybe cycles beneath you, then AFAIK you are not in the wrong.

Not sure how anyone could prove that you are in the wrong, unless you fly over dwellings or a shopping centre etc.

Happy to be corrected.

Thank you

The word ‘Must’ is a definitive but if the question was changed to ‘should’ it could create ambiguity in interpretation.

Answer … Min 50m laterally, unless altitude is greater than 50m in which case the larger distance MUST apply laterally QED 60m
