In A2, for legacy drones, 50m is the minimum legal distance you can be from uninvolved people when in flight.
As you ascend, and pass 50m above ground the ‘1:1 rule’ encourages you to move further than 50m away from uninvolved people, in line with your altitude. So e.g. if you were at 100m altitude, ideally you should position your aircraft at least 100m away from uninvolved people. Flying that way would provide a safety buffer should something go wrong.
Thanks for your reply, Inunderstand the 1:1 rule but the learning still qoutes 50m no nearer so the min distance is 50m yet if you apply the 1:1 rule it could be anything 50+ depending on the height of the drone, in the question the height was 60m so the answer was 60m , it doesn’t make sense to me
and thank you for explaining which makes perfect sense, but the 1:1 rule says that and the guidance in https://uavacademy.co.uk say 50m which is why I’m confused?
the A2 Subcategory
Flying weight of 2kg or less
Must not be flown closer than 50m laterally to uninvolved people
The mock question
If you are flying your UAS at 60m above the surface how far away from uninvolved people must your UAS be?
Why over think it? Most people around you don’t know the rules or regs, and if they moaned, who’s going to be able to measure the distances? Unless you’re a maths genius and can calculate some obscure trig figures to work out a 3D problem, just guess the distance and carry on doing what you were doing.
Do the A2, and if Karen or Ken complains, show them that you’ve attained the level of competence that the regs ask for, and tell them to sod off (nicely of course!) or you’ll call the police.
