Cebu City in the Philippines have just announced their plans to charge people to fly drones in their airspace:
Those who will use drones or any unmanned aerial vehicles for recreational or personal purposes must have to pay P100 for an hour of operation, and P30 for every hour thereafter.
This works out to around £1.44 per hour at the current exchange rate, and £0.72 per hour thereafter.
If Unified Traffic Management (UTM) continues to expand and develop in the UK, coupled with the Remote ID requirements that will allow CAA to identify your drone remotely and record/log ALL your flights remotely (this latter part is likely to be coming, we’ve seen the tender RFP documents from CAA), is paying per hour to fly your drone in the UK going to become a reality?
The Philippines is a police state, I am sure we won’t follow this legislation
Or this even
Those who fail to comply with the requirements of the ordinance shall be liable to six months imprisonment but not to exceed one year or a fine of P5,000.
It could happen , but in a slightly different way. CAA’s preference for remote ID is networked, meaning we will need some form of subscription. BT have already produced a SIM card to support Network RID over cellular. I leaned of this from yesterdays Drone and Sundry podcast.
Not surprised with the Philippines where everything is about making money.
Boracay had a daily permit system of around £15 as did other tourist places in northern Luzon.
Plenty of police and security patrolling the area and fining people.
To be honest, flying a drone in Cebu city id be far more worried about getting mugged or shot than caught flying my drone. Its a truly awful place. (City not the island)
Its not only police. They can and do delegate basic security and fines to other entities.
Try a drone in Boracay it’ll be one of the private security that’ll get you in a few minutes and issue the fine. (They also fine for smoking, littering and plenty of other things)
