Cowdary Ruin - Midhurst

The Cowdray Ruins are the remnants of one of England’s most significant early Tudor houses, located in the picturesque Cowdray Park within the South Downs National Park. The estate was visited by notable historical figures such as King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I.

In September 1793, a devastating fire swept through the mansion while it was undergoing repairs for the impending marriage of the 8th Viscount Montague, resulting in the destruction of most of the property. The only part of the mansion that survived intact is the Kitchen Tower.

Today, the ruins offer a unique glimpse into Tudor architecture and history, with the site managed by the *Cowdray Heritage Trust

*. The ruins are occasionally open to the public for special events and guided tours, allowing visitors to step back in time and experience the grandeur of Tudor life1.
