DJI Air 3 S Flying problem - obstacle avoidance

Hi All, Had a problem whilst flying the air 3 s. While the drone was at around 50 mtrs. above water, it suddenly stopped responding to my RC2 and was showing the red circle around the drone mid air with nothing around as though the avoidance kicked in for no apparent reason. I did however manage to get the drone down to the home position safely. Not used it since. has anybody had a similar experience? Drone & RC2 have been updated.

Bob

Was you flying at sunset by any chance?

That’s happened to mine particularly at sunset. It appears to be a quirk with DJI…

I get many red and yellow avoidance warning out over the sea, but the above seems to stop the drone in its tracks on the odd occasion.

You got it in one! I was flying at sunset… weird or what? I’ll try in daylight. Had no problem with the Mini 4 Pro though.

It’s probably picking up the light angles at sunset and thinking it’s an obstacle. :man_shrugging:

But it appears to be a known issue.

Although this article says air 3 Google says what you pointed out ( which you probably knew ) hence your above,
Thought id post for the OP peace of mind

Edit : for the 3s

Your DJl Air 3s is likely experiencing false obstacle avoidance warnings due to low sunlight, lens reflections, or visual interference, which are common issues affecting drone sensors in specific lighting conditions like sunset. To troubleshoot, update your drone’s firmware, clean the sensors and lenses, and try flying in different directions to see if the issue stops. You can also adjust settings like turning off the obstacle avoidance LED or flying in Normal or Cine mode, which can be less sensitive to environmental conditions. *

Why it happens

Low Sunlight:

At sunset, direct, low-angle sunlight can shine into the sensors, creating reflections or overwhelming the visual detection system, leading to false readings.

Lens Reflections:

Reflections from the drone’s own lenses or other surfaces can be misinterpreted by the sensors as physical obstacles.

Conservative Sensing:

In certain lighting conditions, especially during twilight, the drone’s obstacle avoidance system may become more sensitive and conservative to ensure safety, triggering warnings even when nothing is present.

FYI, I did not know that is why I posted! Thank you anyway.

Thinking out loud, if you were to fly the drone in sports mode it won’t have obstacle avoidance active, as far as I recall anyway (have just bought one).

Would this potentially overcome the issue?

My Air3s does it all the time. Low sun angle, water reflection, all kinds of things trigger it.
Its always been a slight issue on DJI drones but the Air3s is worse - it interrupts various automatics with false alarms.
Either way, if you ever get the drone refusing to do something, sport mode will fix it.
