DJI Air 3S - Wind Resistence

I live in t’ North and honestly, even when the weather is dry it’s still windy. Constantly windy

What’s your real world experience with the Air 3S and the realistic maximum wind gusts you still fly in. I currently have the Mini 4 Pro. Is it worth dropping a wedge of cash on the Air 3S these days? Maybe I’ll stick with a mini and buy a kite instead!!

Air 3S flyers, give me your honest opinions.

I have not yet flown my Air 3s in very high winds but generally the heavier the drone is the better in wind it is.

I went from a mini 3pro to the Air 3s and WOW mind blown by it - the size means you can see it way further away than the mini - like more than twice the distance really.

Here is a good video to show how good it is in comparison –

This is also quite impressive —

Thanks for the vids. Hadn’t really considered the visibility aspect at all.

if I look at the max distance I ever flew my mini 3 pro v the max distance I have flown the Air 3s and as its quite new to me I really get sweaty palms when I don’t see it for a few seconds so I do keep it in line of sight there is a massive distance change like more than twice ! Its crazy how well you can see it at distance.

Tech side of things aside - bigger = better wind resistance + visibility ( further distance) + flight time ( have had 29mins no issue and rarely do I land with the battery bellow 10% - the 29min might have been a 5% battery landing )

Then you go tech side of things - the two camera’s with proper zoom that is quite impressive ( not quite Mavic 4 pro impressive but over the mini 3pro its awesome ) 360 obstacle avoidance ( something the mini 3pro did not have )

Its a great bit of kit and with the C1 on it the only reason you would likely go for a mini drone is down to size for portability - the Air 3S big but not massive but you will need a bigger bag.

Haven’t flown it in really testing conditions, however living here on the Fylde coast it’s windy where inland a smidgeon it could be dead calm. It’s certainly seems to have better wind performance than either my mini 4 pro or even the Mavic 2 pro (which surprised me). I’ve yet to receive a strong wind warning on the 3s where I have flown in conditions that I would have got them on both the aforementioned drones.

It’s all what you’re comfortable with. I fly close to subjects on the sea with my Air 3S and my rule of thumb is nothing generally over a gusting speed of 13mph.

I’m quite comfortable putting my Air3S up when there’s a decent breeze, it does seem to be able to cope with the heavier gusts quite well. Can’t recall the last warning message it threw up due to wind, and the past 3 months have been rubbish for general flying. Drop the cash and experience the upgrade!!

Yes!

It handles the wind much better, nominally:

Air 3S max continuous wind 12 m/s, max gusts 16.8 m/s.

Mini 4P max continuous wind 10 m/s, max gusts 14.0 m/s.

In reality, the Air 3S will cope better closer to its limit than the Mini will cope near its, probably due to the greater mass and more powerful motors

I don’t often fly in strong winds, but when I have the Air 3S has coped well.

Not had a problem with the Air 3S in a good wind with gusts around 25mph where I wouldn’t bother to put the Mini 4 Pro up if there were gusts over 20mph.

My threshold for maximum wind speed is when tall trees in leaf are swaying at the top. That’s about Beaufort force 5. Above that speed the Air 3S grumbles, but carries on, when a Mini would dance around and become difficult to control.

I’ve had many drones including both photo drones and FPV. Big and small. I also have an old enterprise drone. None of them compare with the AIR 3S for not only the ease with which it handles high winds but also how rock steady that camera gimbal is in any wind I’ve ever flown up to about force 7, just as a test. I noticed that it’s the gusts rather than the force of wind that makes things difficult for most drones including the AIR 3S. When the wind is strong and gusting, the controller starts giving out warnings about wind strength. Definitely the best drone I’ve flown for handling wind. I wouldn’t fly anything else now, though I’m considering buying a 360-degree drone just for the possibilities and ease in post for editing. The AIR 3S is unparalleled in consumer drones for handling wind IMHO.

Go for it, you won’t regret it. It handles the wind brilliantly, in the past couple of months the weather has been shit but the only thing that has stopped me flying has been the rain, not the wind.

Seems like I may be doing some drone shopping over the easter weekend

it handles wind very well.

I haven’t had the air 3s long but being military I like to push the envelope so I have flown in strong winds and she holds her own so far up to 30 mph winds according to anemometer. Depends how accurate the anemometer is but strong flight. If you you can go for the Mavic 4 pro if you have the budget and using for professional output but if just for fun the Air3 is awesome, but do you need that or is your mini just for fun, if just fun stick with what you have, just be smart on when to fly or not to fly.
Sorry but that is my honest opinion

Exactly that. :+1:

Totally agree as it could be a costly mistake even for experienced pilots let alone someone who is new..

My Air3s copes admirably on the whole.

I fly over in Hull where it can get quite windy over the estuary. I used to fly a mini 2 and a mini 5 pro - I recently got an Air 3s, what a difference - The 5 was good, but the 3s is on a different level - My honest opinion is that 3s is significantly more stable than the 5
