DJI drone with chinese firmware (anyone come across this)

yes, i am aware dji are chinese… what I did not know is that there are apparently a few versions of firmware about… one of which is chinese for the release of dji drones to the chinese market to fly in china and hong kong.

has anyone come across this?

Is anyone aware of how to replace the firmware with the more globally available firmware?

I was looking at buying a drone direct from a chinese supplier and came across this. the benefit is obviously cost… as they appear somewhat cheaper.

In all my years of modding DJI firmware, I’ve yet to come across anything like this, Rob.

I’m not aware of the firmware being different for any market, on any off-the-shelf drone manufacturer, least of all DJI. Features are often restricted by geolocation, but the hardware all runs the same core OS.

Where did you hear this? Any details or links you can share for the curious?

That said, there are of course a bunch of modified and custom-rolled firmware versions out in the wild, some freely available, some you’ll have to pay for, which will allow your DJI drone to do things that aren’t available in the public domain or readily available from the likes of Drone Hacks.

The Russian “1001” firmware that was ported to some Mavic 3 models being a recent good example. It’s not a firmware which is available on DJI drones bought in Russia, but it’s Russian-modded and simply adopted that name.

So no, never

thanks for that, yes I did wonder the same thing, it came from a discussion with a Chinese supplier

I then did some general info searches and came across things like this

and this one with a slightly clearer reply

no I’m not after an M30…

I thought that it was only the geolocation limitation… now I’m a bit hesitant

this is interesting read the bit about territorial restrictions and limitations for taking off in china being removed

I am after a 3T

Sorry Rob, I thought you were asking about there being different firmwares available for the same model, rather than different hardware / models being made available for the China market

A lot of products have Zonal limitations, dvd’s for instance. My other half has a pair of Ray Ban Meta glasses and in order to get full functionality she uses them via a vpn sourced in USA.

I think the hardware is the same and it is just a firmware that limits their operation to the Chinese geolocation… or that is what it seems like

yes dvds always had their regional limitations… back in the days of getting a region free dvd player so you could buy them early from the us or knock-offs from elsewhere

I was interested to see if anyone has bought one and had them dechinafied… like my android phone which is a china market only one with global firmware installed

I can’t find the post now, but I think it was the original Mavic Mini 1 teardown photos posted on here that showed different hardware based on the model number - for what was branded as the same name drone.

Will shout if I find it

I love that.:joy_cat:. Sounds like an American indoctrination program.
