DJI Mini 2 is it worth upgrading

Hi all , I have a dji mini 2 that have owned for just over 5 years, I have only done just over 10 hours since having it ,on my second flyer id . Looking at if i wanted to fly at night i have lightweight light that still makes weight well below 249g. My worry is in 2 years time approx i will need a remote id unit fitted but that would take it over the 249g and i guess it will be in a different category. So just asking for advice whether to keep dji mini 2 or trade in for something that has remote id already. Thank you in advance

Yes, but…

Don’t forget that you don’t need to broadcast Remote ID until 2028. Who’s to say that a drone you buy today won’t then be unusable in 2029 because CAA have changed another rule?

CAA have a track record on changing their minds, delaying these types of changes, etc.

2028 is a very, very, long time away in terms of regulatory changes and technological advances.

If you like your Mini 2 and it does everything you want it to do my advice would be to sit tight, keep your money, do nothing, and enjoy the Mini 2 for the next two years.

Then when 2028 is just around the corner you can re-assess the landscape and all the incredible new drones that’ll be on the market by then.

Maybe, just maybe, an Avata 360… :crossed_fingers:

If there’s a drone with a feature you want now, then by all means upgrade, but absolutely do NOT upgrade because of something that MAY be needed in 2 years time.

Mini 2 is a good little drone, more or less equivalent to the Mini 4K. It has the ‘Occusync’ RC connectivity (if I remember correctly) and grey RC unit & batteries (apologies if I’ve remembered this wrong). The previous Mavic Mini & Mavic Mini SE (don’t confuse this with the Mini 2SE, DJI seem to like calling different models almost the same thing, look at Mini 4K/Mini 4 Pro) had wi-fi connectivity, which was a definite disadvantage in comparison, even at relatively short distances!

There is talk of replacing the Mini series later this year with a Lito, replacing the Mini 4K (and therefors effectively the Mini 2) and a Lito X, which is to replace the Mini 5. I would certainly wait to see how this pans out before upgrading a very capable drone that, flown carefully around obstacles, can probably satisfy most of your requirements

And…if it’s not C marked, will probably fly 120metres AGL
