DJi Mini 3 Detour?

Out flying these evening, tried to move the drone to the right and nothing happened, moved it to the left and that was OK, tried to the right again still nothing. I have had this happen before but looking at the logs it seems to be showing as detour quite often, haven’t the foggiest what this means? (I wasn’t flying close to anything that would make it detour).

This is the info from airdata:

Off to bed now as its late!

Detour is the Apas (Advanced Piloting Assistance System) kicking in and depending if your setting is set as Brake or Bypass will determine how the drone reacts

Just a thought, but if you’re certain you weren’t near anything that would set off the obstacle avoidance then could there be some debris or similar blocking the sensors on the right hand side of the aircraft?

Looking at the logs it seems to start switching to detour mode almost as soon as the GPS lock is established. Were you getting onscreen notifications from the obstacle avoidance as well?

I gave the drone a good clean and wipe down after it had an aborted take off the other week and ended up on the ground so all the sensors are clean/clear. No warnings on the screen other than one when I was flying at a low height which I’d expect.

Looking back through airdata the first flight I have with lots of these detour messages was on the 3rd March and they are on all logs since then.

Out of curiosity what time of day were you flying? If it was early or late with low sun, that could be activating the obstacle avoidance system. I get it on my Air 2 when the sun is low and bright

It was around 21.40 last night, was quite overcast, I don’t think the sun made an appearance.

Next time it happens turn it off in the settings or stick it in sports mode

Can’t be the sensors stopping sideways flight as the minis don’t have sidways sensors hence why there is a setting to disable sideways flight. It Can’t be that as it will fly left.

I recalibrated everything yesterday morning then went down the front for a test flight, didn’t have any issues with not being able to move sideways but it still has the detour showing, weird that it is the first entry and last entry :man_shrugging:

@markas

Just a thought, or a pot luck guess rather, as I know very little about problem solving, I see the app version you are running v1.10.0, I read somewhere DJI updated that app within hours of release as it had compass or calibration issues the day it was released, to v 1.10.1 thought I’d let you know.

I’ve not had any prompts to update the the fly app on the DJI RC, I did check yesterday morning and plugged it into DJi Assistant to double check everything was up to date.

Did you recalibrate the APAS sensors?

To be honest the flight looks acceptable to me, everything looks fine, Detour mode is an automatic mode if the Apas is enabled and senses an obstacle

The way to test is to do the same flight in sports mode

I did the calibration where you point the drone at the screen (front, rear and reverse) and track the blocks if that is the APAS sensor one?

Yeah that’s it

I had similar when flying near an old disused army barracks in Leeds thats now been developed on, sent it up no problem but wouldn’t go right in the direction of the old army site, would go opposite (left) but then wouldn’t go right again, had to bring it down as wouldn’t have been able to bring it back if I’d have kept going the opposite way, turned out to be the geo fence that was restricting it.

I had a look on drone assist and you’re flying close to EGNL Walney Aerodrome, could this have been the reason why the drone wouldn’t go in the direction you wanted ?.

Don’t shoot me down if this has nothing to do with it.

I was trying to move more towards the railway line, so away from the restriction zone. Up in the North East today for work and overnighting in North Shields, just been out and about and the same has happened tonight, struggled to get it to go right, it whizzes off when the left joystick is operated. I’ll have to wait until I’m home tomorrow night to see what the Airdata says, it’s baffling me it’s like your trying to fly against a strong wind

This is interesting, I’ll have to wait until tomorrow as the drone is in the car boot and I’m tucked up in been

That stops it turning left and right

Good point, maybe mine is just scared of going right

Turn apas off and test it again

Have a look at the airdata of the last flight and pinpoint where the error happened a look at your stick input
