DJI Mini 3 drifting after take off

Yes - I did do a search first! And it came up with a Mavic Air post from 2018.

I have experience some drifting of the drone before but today it was quite significant. I had move it twice as was filming on the canal and it drifted towards branches. I always wait until I have around 12 satellites or more, and that the colour is yellow on the Mini 3 before take off. Today it wandered off to the right a good few feet having taken off and moved it a few metres, it looked like I was moving it myself as it was quite a nice panoramic drift - but not done by me.

Then much later on and after a couple of TOALs it drifted downwards which I wasn’t expecting. Does drift just occur as part of normal day to day flying? I have also found the last two times my map has changed to show no home point and no direction although I am flying blind. This is despite it working on take off and updating the home point. Although I did click on the map today and it opened it, I think showing where the drone was but at that point I was more concerned at getting it placed in the sky so I knew where it was.

Any Airdata to share ?
Could be one of many factors …

Ah… airdata… can I get this from the handset or DJI site or both? I will have a look now

Didn’t you already ask this question

I did but that was a while ago, todays was really noticeable and nothing like before.

Guess its just a thing that can happen.

Always best to wa it until the satellite indicator is white. Taking off on amber/yellow it will gain extra satellites which can throw it off position. A number of erratic take-off behaviours have been put down to insufficient satellites in the past.

Have you tried a compass calibration or even an IMU calibration ?? AirData is always an useful resource to gain an insight into inflight behaviour :+1:

I was not aware of this, so tx Jhdee, very usefu information and solid advice! I would never have thought that picking up extra satellites in flight would throw it off; I can see how losing satellites might do this but gaining them is less intuitive. Thinking about it it makes sense if the drone is already struggling a bit and has to react to new input. Waiting untli the satellite icon goes white would presumably ensure that the positioning is robust enough not to be affected by newcomers.

They are disappearing over the horizon and being replaced by new ones all the time, so there will never be a steady number of satellites, nor will they be in the same places. You can set a minimum number of satellites in the app, but there is no indication of what might be a good number to settle of for this purpose. I’ve put 10, and haven’t come unstuck yet…

My mini3 pro only has the satelite indicator turn white at 18 satelites. The main thing I look for is when the green bar comes up ‘Home point updated’, thats a good way of knowing the position is locked in and youre good to go.

Indeed, I never take off until I hear that voice!

My controllers are muted, the beeping and voice do my head in

… where can you set the number of satellites ?? - personally don’t know of any DJI app that allows you to set the number of satellites

Me neither

The pedants are revolting; ok, lads, settle down now. What I meant is that you can set the minimum number of locked-on satellites that the app will allow you to take off with in the settings menu.

Where ??

Are you talking about the Minimum Good to Fly settings in the UAV Forecast app by any chance ??

Yes, I am; tx Jhdee and tx all for your patience with me! Doddery old twat that I am, I thought the setting was in DJI Fly, 3 dots top right then ‘safety’ menu, but that was just another senior moment to add to my already impressive list… The setting is in UAV Forecast threshold settings, and set to 10; UAV Forecast don’t give much indication of what a reasonable setting is either.

Sometimes my head is a bit wonky. Don’t laugh, you’ll be old and useless too, one day…

I’m already as old as you so I may just have a laugh :man_shrugging:

You just had me messing around with my old Mavic Mini trying to find that setting

Hi - what was under the drone? I have seen drift with running water under the drone. It uses both GPS and ground sensing data…
