new to drones — and on two occasions I have encountered a problem that i cant puzzle out and has affected my confidence in flying the drone - on two occasions despite being within the distance limit from home the drone wont fly forwards just up down sideways - on landing and taking off straight after the forward control has worked- anyone else had this ? It wasnt windspeed as the wind was light.
Any Airdata you can share ?
What height were you when pushing forwards?
Has obstacle avoidance kicked in?
Does the mini 4k have obstacle avoidance?
Have you updated your flysafe database? it might be hitting a geo zone wall?
Also make sure you are logged into your account on the DJI fly app (it automatically logs you out after so many days) as this will limit your max distance despite what you have set in the settings?
A couple of things for you to check at least
Good point, probably not?
Ignore that
You mention no forwards but ok left and right. When it gets the error of going forwards have your turned it round and see it will go forwards in a different direction or is forward faulty regardless of which way it points. Is backwards ok? Otherwise you would have to get it back to you sideways.
Intresting to read this as I had a similar thing yesterday. Im also new to flying drones… Ive probably had around 10 flights.
Theres a new housing estate being built near where I live and I wanted to document the area. Most of my flying was just straight up and rotating the drone, but there were a couple of times when I tried to fly forwards and nothing happened. It would fly left, right, backwards but not forwards. I ended up hitting the RTH button.
Not wanting to hijack your thread but intresting to see if anyone can suggest why it may of happened.

Hi thanks for your response in hindsight i should have turned around to see if forwards would work if i returned to my location - luckily for me it wasnt far from my start point and i could walk over to land it but i did try backwards reverse and that was working fine
Did you try changing to Sport mode?
Good to hear its not just me - look forward to hearing any possible solutions
Look in your settings where you set max height , rth, max distance etc. that could be your problem.
+1
max distance setting from home point… reupdate your home point (if you are stood next to it) or extend the max distance if you are hitting a wall (I used to go on walks with the drone above or around me… got me a couple of times when it hit a wall and stopped dead and refused to move any further (1000m / 1500m max distance setting)… removed the setting all good (or update the home point… in case it decides to fly home).
I had a very similar issue with the brother in laws mini 2. It would only fly about 10m away then refused to go any further. He was adamant it was DJIs fault and was sending it back so they could ‘shove it where the sun dont shine’. Turns out he was now using a different phone with the controller that wasnt logged in to the DJI fly app. Quickly entered log in details and boom, best thing since sliced bread . Hope you find the fix to your problem soon
I had a mini 2 for a while (the mini 4K is basically the same as the old mini 2). It was my first drone, so I got some propellor guards for when I was first flying it. With the guards attached it was limited to quite a small distance and height. It felt like it hit a brick wall.
I didn’t notice at first, but the drone detected the prop guards (maybe just the increased weight) and automatically limited itself to a safety setting of some kind. I had to go into settings and turn it off every time I flew with the prop guards attached.
Sorry, I can’t remember where the setting was, but a message did appear on the screen briefly when I took off, mentioning the restriction. I just didn’t notice it the first couple of times I flew.
It was fine without the guards…
Sometimes our drones log themselves out and then they are limited to 30 meters.
