DJI Neo attracts birds

Type Atti mode in the search bar lots of topics :+1:

Nah I’m no bot. I was flying in my town centre earlier this year and about a dozen pigeons started circling round my drone. Every time the circled, they got closer, so much I landed the drone, rather than having my drone brought down. Seagulls ( and more so Oystercatchers) are the buggers to watch out for though. They will fly directly at drones :wink:

Atti is provided for use in situations where gps is unavailable; not sufficient satellites, indoors, that sort of thing. ISTR your height is limited and hovering without drifting even in a flat calm will take some skill; I wouldn’t use it when it is not needed.

Birds are odd and unpredictable buggers; I lost my Mini 2SE to seagull mobbing, but this was after the nesting season so they weren’t defending nests. They were a group, I think of juveniles, and like human juveniles were probably showing off to each other, or girls. Normally gulls and pigeons ignore my drone, even if it is close to them.

I’m told Oystercatchers will always attack any drone, so at least they’re predictable. They will come at you mob-handed. I’ve also heard of big raptors taking drones out, perhaps mistaking them for prey, and any bird is fully justified in defending it’s nest against anything it thinks might be a threat. The advice I’ve been given is to go into sports mode and fly vertically upwards at full throttle; birds cannot keep up with a drone’s rate of ascent and have to fly upwards at an angle to increase altitude, either in a spiral or by a sort of vertical tacking. You can gtf outta Dodge horizontally while they are doing this.

After the loss of my Mini 2SE, I’m particularly wary of birds. A group of pigeons like in your vid might not have any particularly destructive intentions, and perhaps they were just curious, but one could easily collide with your Neo, which will cut out and crash if it is knocked too far off level.

I haven’t a clue what ISTR is but the height is limited is not true

You don’t have a choice unless you’ve hacked your drone to change the cine switch to ATTI mode

https://istr.org.uk/about

What has that got to do with drones and Atti mode :grinning:

ATTI mode, short for Attitude Mode, is a flight mode used in DJI drones where the GPS and other visual positioning systems are disabled. In this mode, the drone relies on its barometer to maintain altitude but will drift with the wind, requiring manual control to maintain its position.
Flying in ATTI mode can be challenging but offers benefits like smoother footage for videography and the ability to fly in areas with poor GPS signals. It’s often used by professional drone pilots and is essential for learning precise manual control. :grinning:

Hi, I’ve read that if You get a Bird Attack it is best to just go Up Vertical as fast as You Can cos the Birds can’t do that! Don’t Quote Me cos I’ve never been in that situation. I have got the DJI Air2s and The Smart Controller! Awesome Drone and Very Reliable! Are You local to Exmouth? I am in Exeter!

This may well account for the reports heard about flyaways when drones are last seen heading…… rather like the infamous Flight 19.
When you’ve only flown with the steadying influence of a gps fix, suddenly losing all GPS functionality can be very deeply alarming indeed, as you then have absolute control over everything the drone will do. But if there’s a still breeze you better not lose sight of it on your RC screen, remember that arrow points to your current home point. if your GPS lock drops out and you lose your head there’s a goodish chance you’ll lose the machine. Since there’s no GPS it can’t return to Home Point. Just concentrate on that arrow. Yaw your machine till it faces home point, if it’s very high reduce height but not so much as might contact trees or higher ground. All should be fine, But remember a,ways to let your machine max out the number of satellites it’s found,

Well yes whilst it’s true they cant fly vertically, I’d just bang it into sports mode and get away quick.
If you go up, you’re going to have to come back down at some point whilst using up power.

Don’t forget, birds don’t require battery power and will chase you if they are rilled up enough for as long as they want.
