DJI RC-N3 controller and AR glasses ?

Hi Guys,
After search, could not get definitive answer, posting question here.

Is it possible with a DJI RC-N3 controller, and android device that does support DisplayPort Alt Mode, via its USB-C port,
to further output to AR glasses ?
Bought USB-C hub with PD charging input, so far.
Was thinking of getting the AR glasses, but checking first.
Thanks for your thoughts.

According to Google AI you can:

  1. Power & Core Connection: Plug your USB-C hub’s main host cable directly into your Android phone.

  2. Connect a standard USB data cable from the DJI RC-N3, using connectivity port, into one of the standard data ports (USB-A or USB-C) on your hub.

  3. Plug your AR glasses into the dedicated DP Alt Mode video output port on your hub.

If your AR glasses rely strictly on a USB-C connection for video and power, your hub must explicitly feature a downstream USB-C port that supports DisplayPort video output (often marketed as supporting USB-C portable monitors).

Hope this helps!

I am not sure it would work. @D0c.Col I think the AI you used got PD (Power Delivery) & DP (Display Port) mixed up.
I have a couple of USB-C monitors that plug into a Thunderbolt port of a laptop, and they won’t work on a few different hubs.

It is worth a try as it might work. If it doesn’t, depending on where you bought them from, you could just send them back for a refund.

I am looking at doing a similar thing for my RC2 controller where I plug it into a small USB-C hub, then buy a mobile 15.6" screen that runs of PD power. My idea is to velcro a PD battery pack (to power the monitor) and small USB-C doc to the back of the monitor. Then get a 1m USB-C to Mini HDMI cable. I can then fly while somebody next to me holds the 15.6" monitor and can see what I see. I want to use this when I am asked by somebody to take photos of something for them. They can help to direct me to what they want.

@WoolySheep The answer was based on a reddit user who claimed to have done it, so not 100% and the hub needs a DP Alt Mode video output.

If you’re just wanting to show a screen view to someone I’d consider the Rayneo Pro 4 glasses. They are not perfect but just plug straight in to the RC2 and don’t need a power source or any kind of setup (although there maybe an issue if corrective glasses are required).

Thanks for the info @D0c.Col , apart from an expensive Dell Dock, I haven’t seen a USB-C Hub/Dock that has a dedicated DP port on it before. I assume they must be out there, I have just not seen one.

Thanks for the info on the glasses. Is an interesting idea, but I wouldn’t be using it too often, and a 15.6" screen is £50, for the glasses would be 4 times the price.

@WoolySheep Cool, Alan. Not used one myself, but apparently, there are many USB hubs out there with DP mode video output capabilty, just google it and Amazon is falling over backwards to sell you one. Whether they work or not is another matter…

Hi @D0c.Col , I’m curious now as when I search I do find loads that have actual Display Port sockets on them, but I was only able to find one that had DP in a USB-C port ( USB C Hub 10Gbps,MOKiN USB C Splitter with 4K@60Hz Video Output for MacBook | Type C Hub with 100W PD Charging,3*10Gbps Data Transfer,USB4 DisplayPort Multiport Dongle for MacBook Pro and Type-C Devices: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories).

Could you please give me the URL you have on Amazon that lists multiple ones with DP on USB-C. I have one of the big Dell Docks that can do it, but that was £200, and I’m not going to be spending that amount again just for the drone. Since I have two USB-C monitors, it would be cheaper for me to use one of them than buying a new 15.6" HDMI monitor.

No it won’t work… I was going to try that too. There’s a load of dodgy info on that subject, it does it does not. Especially on Ai. It don’t!

That is a shame.

On a side note, I thought I would try plugging in a USB-C cable between the RC2 and one of my USB-C monitors, and it works a dream.

This was the item I got, but does not work as I hoped.
“# Lemorele USB-C Video Splitter, Dual USB-C Output 4K@60Hz, 100W PD
Compatible with Steam Deck, Switch 1 and Switch 2, Supports AR Glasses & Portable Monitors, Mac Only Mirror Mode”

So I have DJI RC-N3 → google Pixel (with DP) → Lemorele USB-C Video Splitter(powered by PD), → External portable USB-C monitor that runs on USB-C power.

When I connect it up monitor switches off and DJI-app complains no connection to Controller.
Thanks for your thoughts, it’s an interesting nut to crack !

On a side note, I went mad and bought the new RC pro2 controller. Nice kit, but as I understand it that won’t do what you want either! Controller to Glasses… The original Pro does but it’s a function removed from the latest. I haven’t tried it, so it maybe twoddle. HDMI out etc but not USBC vid out.

Hi @Kellybob , that sucks. I don’t want to go to goggles/glasses, I only want to go to a monitor so a 2nd person can help direct where they want photographs taken. The monitor option also works well when plugged into a phone so I can wirelessly broadcast from my Goggles 3.

Thanks for posting this info. You have saved me the time and expense of finding out same !

Forgot to post link. But rem I cannot get this to work as planned:
