DJI RC Pro 2 Controller + DJI Dongle 2 issues on Air 3S

Weird one, before on my previous Air 3S I used the Dongle 2 inside the drone, connected to it before every flight so it was ready if I lost 04 transmission, all’s good.
Now with my new Air 3S whilst coupled to the new RC Pro 2 controller the Dongle 2 registers inside the Air 3S but will not get a 4G signal or any signal at all.
So I have had a lengthy chat with DJI who told me to place the Dongle 2 inside the RC Pro 2, voila signal straight away, so now I have 4G all the time with the RC Pro 2.
But here is the question, how does that benefit the Air 3S if the Dongle 2 is inside the Controller?
Maybe I am missing something, but I assumed the Dongle inside the Drone allowed for better transmission if you lost the signal from the controller, or is it better in the controller?
I will test later to see what happens, my head is about to :exploding_head:
But even still thinking about it, when the dongle was in the previous Air 3S and it lost normal 04 transmission and connected via 4G how did the controller get this signal?

It doesn’t

To use Enhanced Transmission you need a mobile internet connection on both devices.

Which controller were you using with that setup, Mark? I assume the controller was connected to the internet via your 4G smartphone?

Both will need a cellular signal, you need a dongle in both or you should be able to tether the controller to your phone

RC remote that came with the Air 3S, yes it was connected to my phone, that is what I thought because it would never get a 4G signal until my phone connected, but even now it won’t in the Air 3S, works great in the RC Pro 2, but I don’t need it in that I can use my mobile to hotspot as I always do before flying anyway

Yeah exactly mate, that current setup won’t be using Enhanced Transmission at all..

Different drone models shown here on the DJI site, but the principal is the same:

As per last image, both devices need to be able to get to the internet to work.

Sorted to an extent, DJI have confirmed that the RC Pro 2 will not work with the Dongle 2 when fitted in a Air 3/3S or Mini 4 Pro, they have no intention of making it work to comply with regional regulations regarding Line of Sight flying, sadly some numpties took advantage and ruined it for the rest of us, so I have had to return the Dongle 2, I get their reasons, the Ocusync 4 was always good in the Air 3S anyway

Hmmm… so which drones will the RC Pro 2 work with via Dongle 2?

I’m don’t believe that at all.

If VLOS was ever a concern for DJI they wouldn’t have invented OcuSync in the first place with its 20km range in FCC and 10km range in CE mode

And if VLOS was a concern they’d simply discontinue the product, not continue to support it for specific models.

Sorry DJI, I’m calling bullshit on that one.

Disappointing, it was probably great as a fall-back for OcuSync interference issues

Off topic slightly Mark, did you return the Mavic 4 kit and buy a separate RC Pro 2 on its own?

Yes and bought the Air 3S flymore with basic controller, not the screen version
As above though, that is exactly what DJI said, they are working on a new system to work with Ocusync 4 and 4+, thus the RC Pro 2 having the dock for the Dongle 2, no idea what or when, and yes it was a great fall back feature, worked great at York Knavesmire when I was behind the grandstand and lost signal, the 4G took over straight away

I’m sure I saw a video on YouTube about the Dongle used on a Mini 4 Pro ? The video producer got a lot of stick in the comments for flying beyond VLOS and I seem to remember there’s the issue of using the 4g network without some sort of licence for such things?

Thanks Mark, didn’t mean to be nosey

No worries, loved the Mavic 4 Pro, just couldn’t justify the extra £1400 on top of a Air 3S with the RC Pro 2, if I were using it for professional use and earning then that is a different thing

That is what DJI were trying to say without actually admitting it

Please forgive my lack of knowledge, I have a mini3 pro and RC2 I thought the drone would RTH if the signal was lost (if set up correctly). As far as I’m aware I’m not connected to the internet via any dongle, Should I be?

@RMB1 no, you’re all good as you are.

Your RTH feature will use the drones internal GPS signal, no need to worry about dongles or other types of internet connection here
