For those who use waypoints -
Apparently DJI have removed the option to continue waypoint mission should your signal be lost now following the EU rules, I know nothing about waypoints so thought I’d post it here for those that do use them, was going to post it in the thread from @macspite but I see that’s a different issue mentioned below ?
Edit : looks like you’ll have to click over to YouTube to watch
I can’t agree with him that it’s “totally bonkers”. Just because you’ve set a waypoint mission, doesn’t mean you’re flying “fire and forget” - you still need to be able to take control at any moment, and if you can’t because of signal loss then it seems right that the usual safety features kick in.
That’s exactly what I thought, if there’s no signal between rc & drone when you hit a button on the rc the drone won’t receive it ?
Again I know naff all about waypoints but I’m sure the loss of signal between the both mentioned above is correct,
I guess it’s like saying - the fuse went on the kettle but the extension lead is still turned on & it should know to finish boiling first
Saw a thing last week talking about the inevitable path influencers take towards faux anger as a way to keep their audience engaged.
How often has this guy actually flown a waypoint mission where he’s maintained VLOS as required but still lost signal? If it’s more than none he might want to get his drone checked out for faults.
I was under the impression that the earlier drones (Mavic Pro, Mavic 2 Pro for example) had onboard memory and processing that allowed waypoints to be uploaded to the drone for true autonomous flight, so that if the controller lost contact with the drone it would still continue the waypoint mission.
Software like litchi was how you planned and uploaded waypoints at that time.
This functionality was removed with later series drones, and waypoint functionality moved onto the smarter controllers, and really all the waypoint function does is take over the sticks, and operate as a smoother stick operator. The controller HAS to stay in RF contact with the drone, and lost-signal protocols should be put in place before the flight.
I have mixed feeling on this point. I don’t use waypoint missions that often but when I do I normally set RTH on loss of signal, seems fairly sensible.
However, some while ago I created a circular mission but each time I ran it, signal between drone and RC was inexplicably lost at the same position. The area was clear of obstructions and in VLOS.
Consequently I decided to change the loss of signal setting from RTH to Continue. The mission was successfully completed without incident. I got the shots I wanted but it would have been a lot more hassle had the continue setting not been available. Another point to consider is what happens if I want to repeat that exact mission at various times over the course of (say) a year but having to fly it manually due to the black spot.
I fly a mini 4 for waypoint missions and noticed a short while ago that the continue option was missing. No big deal for me and I don’t think fully automatous is a good idea but it’s a pity not to have the option for occasional use.
