DJI Smart Controller - Early Pre-Flight Thoughts

Moved your post to a thread full of users thoughts which will help you decide.

I am thinking about doing the same, currently using my iPad mini 4 but on bright sunny days I can hardly see the screen at all. What attracts me to the smart controller is everyone saying it’s ease of use and it’s very bright screen.

The only worrying thing is the previous posts but they are from a while ago so I guess the updates have sorted these by now .

Hopefully.

The SC is bigger an heavier than the normal controller and IMHO heavier than normal controller with a tablet.

The core benefit is being a single box solution.
Battery life is good, the screen brightness far better than any phone or tablet. The controller basically just works which is what it needs to do.

Criticism wise, obviously no play App Store and working third party apps are somewhat limited.
Updates are basically when DJI fancy and not in sync with the store play release of Go.
Doesn’t fit in the flymore bag so you’ll need to source a bag or case:
Will break if dropped into a hard surface.
Internet access for maps etc is either via 4G dongle bought separately or tethering to your phone.
The quick video edit modes in Go work fine but performance is slower than a decent new smartphone.

That pretty much sums it up. :+1:

I always connect it to the hotspot on my phone and re the app store, I do think DJI couldve made a better fist of its android integration to better incorporate the play services. Its also quite an old android version too. Having said all that it does do a pretty good job and I wouldnt want to clog it up with numerous unrelated apps. Ive got my phone that!

Took the plunge and ordered a SC. I used it for the first time yesterday during a trip to Glencoe with @stridingsandal and I have to say I’m very impressed. It feels like a well made, sturdy piece of kit. The quality of the screen was amazing even in the bright sunlight I was shooting in. Biggest bonus was the set up time, turn it on and your off and running. I’d previously been using my iPad Mini 4 with the controller and really struggled in bright sunlight to see the screen. Highly recommended after only 1 use :+1:t2:
