Do you need to unlock a DJI drone in a no-fly zone?

When I obtained my PfCo, it took place in an area where you needed to apply an unlocking code to the drone itself as it was in Military Airspace.

I might need to apply to NATS for permission to fly in a restricted air zone approximately 4km from a London airport. If they give me permission, is that’s all I need or do I also need to unlock my drone to allow me to fly there? If the latter, how do I go about that?

Thanks

@Hubster Your question has been moved to the Questions & Answers category (thanks @DeanoG60 )

It depends exactly where “there” is and if it falls inside one of DJI’s restricted zones:

It also depends which colour it falls in too :grimacing:

Explanation of the DJI colour coded zones can be found here: https://dronescene.co.uk/about#DJIGEOZones

Can you share any more details?

Thanks for responding.

The postcode is here: RM13 9DB. It’s an area of about 5km in space and it’s London City Airport that’s the issue.

Does it fall inside a DJI restriction?

According to Google Maps, the postcode is over 8kms from the centre of the runway at London City so you should be OK. You’ll probably be in the CTR area though, call the ATC at London City, see what they say.

One to be careful of is what DJI call Altitude zones normally following a similar shape and occasionally same lines as Runway Protection Zones.

They are a pain in the arse to unlock and take some planning.

Thanks all. From looking at the Drone Scene map, it is in a yellow DJI area which means I will just get a warning I am in Class E airspace but will be able to take off. I’ll put a request in via NATS regardless.

Thanks for your help.

I’ve been flying in Leeds today in an “Altitude zone”, I didn’t have to unlock anything, just had a warning at the top of the app. It just tells you the maximum height you’re allowed to fly. The one I was in had an “Altitude zone” set at 459 feet.

The issue comes when it says 60 meters…

Have you managed to get DJI to unlock a 60m altitude zone for you? What’s the trick? I tried to submit a custom unlocking request and explained that TOAL was outside the airport FRZ, that I had called ATC and they had no interest in me flying there and that the TOAL location was actually 160m below the level of the runway! Eventually they approved my request and I downloaded the unlocking license OK. But when I came to fly my altitude was still limited to 60m. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Fell victim to this 60m limit last night. Serves me right to turn off the DJI zone on the DS map when planning a flight! :man_facepalming:
