Drone assist electric symbols

Notice recently that opening drone assist there a load of electric symbols appearing over nearly every house i streets near me…

Out of interest, did you contact Drone Assist to ask them what they are?

FYI, they’re solar panels.

We remove them from Drone Scene because they’re not relevant to drones.

Yep Drone Assist don’t want your drone casting a shadow on your neighbours solar panels. It could bring the National Grid down :joy::joy::joy::joy::joy:

We’re biased, but we’d always recommend Drone Scene over Drone Assist as it does everything Drone Assist does plus 101 other useful things too

I use both; Drone Assist is a separate app on my phone screen and needs less clicks to access it than Drone Scene, but Drone Scene will give you much better information and does a better job of filtering out that which is not really relevant to drone flying such as satellite dishes. It works out that I use Drone Scene when I’m at home planning flights, but am more likely to use Drone Assist on my phone when I’m out and about.

If you’re new to the game, knowing where to legitimately fly is a bit daunting. If your drone is less than 250g you’re good to go most places so long as you fly according to the CAA’s Drone Code. Different rules apply 250g+ and again 500g+. Drone Assist and Drone Scene maps will show where the FRZs are in red, NOTAMs in blue, and ground hazards in yellow. You may be able to fly in some red FRZ areas with online permission from airport ATC, but not around military bases, prisons, or royal residences.

For NOTAMs, effectively temporary FRZs, you will need to click on the blue area to see what the exact limitations are for that NOTAM; some may only apply above a certain height and you are fine to fly your drone below that height (up to 400’ AGL of course).

The yellow areas, ground hazards, vary considerably. They are basically things you need to be aware of but you can fly there; they may be a school or hospital where privacy issues need to be considered, a park or sports ground where crowds may gather but which are fine when there are no crowds, or SSSIs where you may need to consider the needs of nesting birds.

Ground hazards are also shown as icons, and as well as satellite dishes (!) might be power lines, masts, chimneys, electricity suppy sub-stations where electromagentism might affect your control signal, towers, & such. Again, you can fly but you need to be aware of such obstacles to avoid them.

Your responsibiltiy to check that it is safe and legal to fly.

Red = Flight Restricted Zone, FRZ, a RULE.
Blue = Notice To Airmen, NOTAM, the CAA considers your drone to be an aircraft, which makes you an airman, a RULE, but it doesn’t always apply to you; read the NOTAM for details.
Yellow = Ground hazard, something you should be aware of and give consideration to when you are flying, ADVICE
Icon = Ground hazard, see above.

Also, watch out for trees, lamp posts, telegraph poles, balloons, kites, birds other drones, and me. Flying below the height of surrounding trees, buildings and other obstacles needs care and attention, above them you can be a little more relaxed. If there are emergency service helicopters landing in your area, land and stay down until they’ve gone away.

Permission to TOAL (take of and land) from private and some council propety is needed, and you will not get it from the NT, English Heritage (and Scottish Heritage & CADW in Wales), and some water boards. Whatever they say and whatever prohibiting notices they put up, they do not have any jurisdiction over any airspace, which is the sole remit of the CAA, so you can overfly them within the Drone Code. This is a risk of course, because if your drone comes down on their property, you may well not be able to recover it easily, but you can TOAL from outside the property and fly over it.

You can fly from pubic highways and footpaths.

The inter-tidal areas of beaches and shorelines, sandbanks, and estuary mudflats is Crown property, and the King has no objection to your flying from or over them. They are shown in purple on Drone Scene maps. They may be SSSIs as well, of course, and access to them may be over private property making them inaccessible. Check tide tables, especially for sandbanks.

He may not be there are cavets to the CE T&C’s … Section 2.

Always double check when flying from CE land. :+1:

Open in your browser then add to home screen, creates a shortcut that works just like an app

The solution doesn’t work for me!

Can’t find Drone Scene app by search in IOS ‘App Store’ on iPhone, and can’t access download details in Google. Where can I find it as an app with an icon like you have screenshotted, separate from the GADC website?

Of course, it is not difficult to access the map throug the website, but if I’m in a hurry Drone Assist is a simple click on an icon and I’m straight to wherever I was when I came out of it last time, at the same level of magnification. On the website, I have to go into the menu, then centre the map on my location, then enlarge it to the point where it is giving me useful information.

If I could get in with one click on an icon to the same location at the same maginfication and with the same layers as I left it, like I can with Drone Assist, I would do so and abandon Drone Assist, but as things are DA is just that little bit more convenient…

Is not in the App Store
If your using iOS go to safari put in as above ( drone scene ) press arrow thing at bottom then displays as below,

Add to Home Screen is easy

Job done same as with grey arrows.

The big problem I have with drone assist is when I zoom in and it shows every little thing it considers to be a hazard ( sub stations, solar panels etc. To get rid of these I have to go to the advanced menu and de-select these sort of things. But, it resets itself once I zoom out. When I zoom in again the map is cluttered with everything as before. I much prefer Dronescene, less cluttered and now the very useful height and distance measurements ( which DA doesn’t have.:wink:
