Drone Assist vs Drone Scene

Is there a preference between the above apps? I understand they both use Altitude Angel so is there any reason to use one but not the other?
The reason I ask is because I was reading a DroneScene thread regarding flights just south of Southampton. The area is in a CTR and the author stated flying was ok and there then followed a discussion regarding which map apps to use. As I live within this area, I contacted Southampton Airport who informed me that a NATS application was required for this zone, which completely opposes what the drone pilots were stating. I’ve been flying for a while yet I still get confused with some discussions.

Where do we start?

If you become a member of Grey Arrows @anon7300103 then you’ll get access to all these other map layers (which drone assist doesn’t have):

You’ll also get access to all these map tools (which drone assist doesn’t have):

You’ll also get access to over 2,000 recommended places to fly (which drone assist doesn’t have).

The list probably goes on

If you want to fly within the Southampton airport FRZ you just need to ring the ATC down there (phone number available via Drone Scene).

It’s probably best just to reply to the thread in question and ask for an explanation of the parts you don’t understand

Not to blow smoke up @PingSpike’s arse, but I do genuinely only use DroneScene these days. It’s got all the same data as Drone Assist, but comes with a bunch of extra info and tools. Plus, if I’ve any questions, spot any problems or have any thoughts on improvements we’ve got a direct line to the powers that be.

The only thing Drone Assist does that DroneScene doesn’t is provide a link to the UTM portal to apply for permissions to fly in an FRZ (though if you’ve ever tried to click the link for one of those you’ll know it’s an absolute sh*t show and easier to just call).

Thanks Guys. Just to confirm, I have joined the club.
The issue I had was that I phoned Southampton Airport and they told me if I wanted to fly within the CTR I needed to get permission. Maybe he was confused and misunderstood me, thinking I was asking to fly in the FRZ. See why I’m confused?

Yeah there’s a few reasons we haven’t bothered to integrate that

Others have commented, in the past, that Southampton ATC have been very accommodating for FRZ flying.

For the additional layers on Drone Scene, you need to be a subscribed member.

One of the features totally unique to DroneScene is the Local Authority tool where you can find out what Local Authority area you plan to fly in and whether or not they have any bye-laws restricting drone flights. This info is probably the most difficult to come by quickly - and its all there in DroneSccene :+1: :+1: :+1:

This has confused me a bit too as a newbie. Agreed that DroneScene offers way more info about where to fly and who owns what but I’ve got into the curious habit of filing a “flight plan” in DroneAssist and having it monitor the airspace while I’m flying. I have no idea if this is necessary or even useful but I find it quite cool and haven’t found out if/how to do this in DroneScene.

In reality I watch the “real” airspace above me using EasyVFR which is fascinating ‘cos choppers from Yeovil and Weston swarm around Brent Knoll where I fly like wasps at about 1000ft or less, but that’s another topic entirely.

The upper menu bar has a tab titled “Flight Rports” - click on this and it willl open the instruction on how to link your DroneScene account to your AA/DroneAssist account. You can then file your flight report via DroneScene :+1:

Was whoever you spoke to on work experience? :joy:

You can fly to your hearts content around the Southampton CTR -you don’t need any permission. In fact I was out most of the day flying around parts of the Soton CTR.

Welcome to the club BTW. :grinning:

So, I use the Drone Assist app for flight reports too and the alert for nearby aircraft is a useful feature, but I can’t see a way to enable that from the drone scene site.

The other useful bit is the pdf flight plan you can download, which I love for commercial flights. Does that get created if the report is initiated from drone scene?

I’ve become a member as I want to support this resource, but would be lovely if those features are possible. :slightly_smiling_face:

Drone Scene doesn’t offer this yet as only one or two people have ever mentioned it and nobody has ever asked for it. If enough people ask for it, we’ll add it to the road map. Please feel free to start a new feature request thread in the Drone Scene category and see if you can garner some interest

Just a heads up on that, I’m guessing it’s only using ADS-B though? I’ll look in to it some more.

It gets created, it just doesn’t get emailed to you. This one is already on the road map for a future release

To be honest not every aircraft gets picked up on the Drone Assist alerts. Not a few days ago I had it activated and a couple of light aircraft came close by and it didn’t ping any notification.

Ah ha! Excellent, thanks @Jhdee I’ll go check that out

To be honest EasyVFR is way more useful for watching all the higher up goings on.

I’ve only glanced at the DA flight reports as I’m only doing recreational flying at the moment, but I have spent a lot of time in Airdata recently and that has an incredible amount of flight info. Could you use that for a report, or is it too low level? Is there something more “official” about the DA ones?

Not a feature I use, but my wife is an avid user of the Flight Tracker app and announces the details of most flights we hear overhead. From that, I’d say that the majority of aircraft that I’d actually worry about when flying my drone (i.e. the low, small ones) don’t show up on the tracker.

Thanks for the response. Yeah, I imagine it’s ADSB only, not MLAT but I guess it depends where they’re feeding from. I run a Pi that feeds both to FlightAware, FlightRadar24 and ADSBExchange but none of those apps have proximity alerts frustratingly, so it’s really the best there is at the moment.
