Drone Show Live meet up at Chatterley Whitfield derelict Colliery - AIR3 and AVATA

A day out at the weekend to meet up with friends from the @DroneShowLive and 2 locations revisited for a flight, a return to a wet and windy Chatterley Whitfield Colliery and the stunning Mow Cop Castle - video to follow…

The footage captured with the AIR3 and AVATA of the derelict colliery being reclaimed by nature - despite the best efforts of the Chatterley Whitfield Heritage group - made me think of the lives of those who once worked in this busy colliery, thousands of hard-working folk, and this coloured the feel of the video, somewhat melancholy, looking back to the fading footsteps of the miners long past…

Colours have been largely left as natural as possible, with just the green knocked back a little in DaVinci Resolve as it was overpowering, and a light vignette applied…

I hope it is enjoyed…

Absolutely amazing

Thanks Alex, appreciate the comment, just been back there to meet the Heritage group, who are using the video on a loop n their volunteer run visitor centre, got a nice tour of the site and a promise of some filming in the autumn - possibly inside the buildings…

Thank you kindly

Thanks Ian, appreciated

Thank you Kevin

Thanks John

I just got my drone this week and have only launched once, read the codes etc, and as instructed just went as far as I could keeping drone in line of sight
Was just wondering, you must have lost sight taking this video, so do you fly navigating watching screen?

We were up the side of a hill, so I could see the area of the flight very well, however it perhaps did pass out of sight a few times, which is my lookout and generally something to be avoided according to the CAA Drone code. There is however a difference between losing VLOS as you pass behind something and losing VLOS due to extreme distance.

The letter of the law as far as the drone code says it should stay in VLOS and be close enough to orientate without looking at the screen, however the reason cited for this is so you do not risk crashing into another aircraft - hence I ascribe to the sensible interpretation that Ian in London has given, which is as long as I can see the area I am flying in and see that there are no other aircraft that I am in danger of crashing into, then I will perhaps risk flying out of sight for a moment or two… That however is my choice, and one I could get into hot water should I have an accident.

As it is, I use a combination of views to navigate, primarily the screen with glances up to the drone, but on my AIR3 I also have the collision sensors set as cameras, so when flying sideways or backwards I have a view available albeit in b+w…

As with many groups, GADC does not condone flying outside of the CAA Drone code, but also we have a ‘no Drone Police’ policy, which means we each take responsibility for our own flights, and it is generally not something that is discussed on the forum…

I’ve flown from the top of the slag heap, much better view, bloody stairs where very steep, on the way down took the path a lot easier.
Very nice video.

Thanks… we had a tour yesterday, the Friends are now using our video in the Heritage centre, and I may be going back in the autumn to do some more filming, this time surveying some inaccessible areas for them…

Thanks Jack…

Erm, only about 250ish videos in 21 months, that’s only about 10 a month on average, no big deal tbh

Erm, where do we get the time, well, we go flying at least once a week, and usually fly a couple of locations, plus we go away on holiday to Scotland 2 or 3 times a year, which, means I can get another 15 to 25 locations flown, and then for each trip there is a compilation showreel, plus a yearly showreel…

As to editing time, I work from 8 til 5, but 95% of the time I am working from home, my hubby goes to work at 6am, so I have 2 hrs a day to edit and play with footage…

10 a month :astonished:  what sort of total distance have you covered in that time? Ive just bought another battery for my avata toget my flight time up

So far I am at about 850km total flight distance, and about 60 hrs flight time…

I have 3 batteries for each drone, and a car charger set, so if we are moving location I can recharge batteries as we travel, useful when away from home

Ill have to invest in a car charger too. I gueess like photography taking drone pics/vids is about traveling. Not being able to charge while out and about isnt ideal. Its limiting how far i can go at the minute. Youve clocked up some times and distance then! How often have you used the longer focal length with the air 3 Suzanne?
