Editing Photos

I know this sounds like a stupid question. However with people asking me to edit my photos and stuff, please tell me I won’t be criticised for editing the original photos? if you get what I mean and I still want to fly over Rotherham Minster while I’m off on Annual leave from work but I’m thinking of around this time of night when it’s less busy

I didn’t think it would have been criticism. I understand why people say what they do and this will help if photos are looking a bit grey or too dark

It all depends on what you want to acheive with your photography David. You can edit your photos and videos anyway you want to! You dont have to edit them at all pal :+1:. Edit* think ive misunderstood this question! Are ypu looking for advice on how to edit photos David? :see_no_evil:

Every digital photo you see has been edited, we actually mean processed, in some form as the original ‘image’ is just data in the form of ones & zeros

For us to see an image it has to be processed, you have a choice of jpeg, which allows software to process it
When I say software it could be drone, phone, home computer etc etc

You can pick RAW, which is literally the raw data file presented as produced from the sensor
This RAW image will always need processing, hence it looking dull and flat, this is where you make your own decisions and edit/process as you want the final image to look

I always try to explain it from back in the film camera days
jpeg is akin to getting your prints back from the shop, already processed to however they set their machine up, while raw is much more like using the negatives and processing them yourself in the darkroom
Alas, less and less of the younger generation are able to grasp the film analogy

If you are happy with the way your camera produces jpeg, then all well and good
I prefer RAW as it allows me to work with the file and produce the results as I want, rather than some anonymous computer programmer who has no idea of what I want from my photography

There is no right or wrong way, but for me post processing the image on my computer, a digital darkroom if you like, is part of the whole photography thing

There’s an element to editing that I do understand especially if it’s dark. I think I take a lot from the Grey Arrows. I sometimes think that because my brain is not the right way around (Autism Brain) I sometimes don’t know how to ask things or place the correct words or ask the correct things and most of the time. I think I need help and guidance from everyone and they can guide me to do what I need

My controller is set to J+RAW

If you want to play with editing shots, try sticking to just the RAW files, as the jpeg has already been done by the built in software
There should be some jpeg settings on your camera, where you can add contrast, saturation, sharpness etc to tailor the final image

The RAW files also have much more data than the jpeg and thus have much more latitude and image quality to work with

I also forgot to mention, while you are trying out editing, keep it set to RAW+jpeg, until you are fully confident in your editing skills

Just in case you get that ‘killer shot’, and at least the jpeg should be of sufficient quality

Good question that, the answer in my opinion is choice.
Photos have been edited ever since photography was discovered. Either in the darkroom where you would “push” processing and/or use hard or soft paper to alter the dynamic range (HDR). We now we do this digitally.

I have heard all of the childish arguments about its not original or you supposed to get it right in camera. Mainly from people who don’t have anything to say but have to say something. None of them can make a logical argument.

The jpeg image is automatically edited by the camera firmware anyway. The images you see is an opinion of what a software developer thinks a half decent image should look like once you press the camera button. The camera effectively alters the white balance, exposure, contract and situation to give what should be a pleasing image to most.

I agree its right to criticize images that have been manipulated in a way to deceive. I also see images that have been over processed, either by people who just don’t have good editing skills or by over enthusiastic individuals. In either case, good constructive criticism can be extremely helpful.

This is where choice come in. A camera is a tool and like all tools they need tuning up to work effectively. If you shoot in RAW you capture a lot more data to work with and to keep in your digital archive as shot.

The choice of editing techniques is then down to you. A good starting point is to try and aim for an image that looks like its not been too edited. Most digital images tend to look a little flat and just a small tweak of contrast, white balance, lens correction and removing chromatic aberration is all that’s needed in most cases.

Thank you for your reply, I was just thinking on the lines of Constructive Criticism and also I do accept that Constructive Criticism is very helpful. I don’t want to keep taking photos of the same things though. I must admit that I do feel more confident in flying but I am still learning things and I sincerely appreciate all the help that Grey Arrows gives me. I often overthink things and this is the reason why I ask questions etc etc but I need to get into a mindset of not overthinking things and not going into too much detail about things but this is how I have always been since I was at school

Do whatever you want to do to achieve the result you want. Morturn has it pretty much spot on. I have submitted work to various forums and had a lot of criticism, usually because most of my stuff is either high contrast (black and white) or over saturated in colour. But thats the look I’m going for and I take the photos for me. I do also try to get as much right in camera as I can. Not because it’s “the right way” but because I hate sitting at a computer and I’m crap at editing!!!
Do whatever feels right for you, some people will like it, some won’t.
