Hi all
As a complete newbie to drones I was looking for some advice on possible first drone please.
DJI at the moment have an really good offer on their Mini 4K drone with the RC-N1 controller or is it worth spending more on the DJI Mini 3 with the RC- screen controller?
Look forward to reading your thoughts on either of these two drones.
Both really good drones & I guess it depends on your budget but out of the two you have mentioned I’d go with the mini 3 more so as I think the controller with screen is better & less agg than having to plug a phone or tablet in to the N1 controller, just my personal opinion ….
Are you going to buy brand new or used? Whats your budget? I bought a 2nd hand air2s from a grey arrows member on this site and so glad i did. Mainly becuase i wasnt sure what i wanted to go into. Fpv or gps. Now i fly both and probably a bit more gps/standered camera drone.
Another vote for the Mini 3 with the RC controller. Not having to faff around with cables from your controller to your smart phone is - for me - worth its weight in gold
If you stick with a sub 250 gram drone you’ll be able to fly it almost anywhere. Once you get over 250 grams, the locations you fly legally become a lot more restrictive. Have a look at Good 2 Go here — Good 2 Go - Can I fly my drone here? A short Q&A to determine whether you can legally fly your drone — and try a few scenarios to see what you need to fly in any given areas
I have a mini 2, (which I understand is effectively a first iteration of the mini 4K), and a mini 3 (not mini 3 pro).
I like the mini 2. It has a slightly more robust build quality than the mini 3 but is a little more noisy in flight. I always found attaching a phone to the RC-N1 controller a bit of a pain and the screen was too small anyway. I now fit an old iPad to the controller which is okay as I leave it permanently attached to the controller but is still nowhere near as convenient as a built-in screen.
If one is in a hurry it is much easier (and quicker) to pick up the mini 3 with an RC controller, throw it in a bag and whizz out the door. However, as far as I can tell it’s not possible to load 3rd party apps. (like flylitchi) onto the RC controller. This is a pity because flylitchi really extends the capabilities of a drone.
Bottom line. If I had to make a choice between the mini 2 (4K) with an RC-N1 controller or mini 3 with with the RC controller I’d go with the mini 3 purely on the grounds of convenience. Both though are brilliant drones.
I wouldn’t get shot of my mini 2 either. It’s a great little machine on which I learned a lot from a very ignorant standing start as it was bought for me as a surprise birthday present. I never found the lack of obstacle avoidance a problem as I never knew such a thing existed in the first place so was always careful, if a little nervous initially.
When you get your mini 4 pro I’m sure you’ll be very pleased with it but think you will notice the more plasticky feel about it when compared to the mini 2. Presumably to keep the weight below 250g. Still a great buy though.
Thanks for your response. I agree, it’s a great basic model and I hope to continue to be able to use it.
I have the Mini 4 already, it’s just that I’m 400 miles from home and would prefer to wait for home before I break her out, meantime, it’s knocking around where I am with the Mini 2.
