First time FPV flying (DJI Avata 2, Google 3)

Hi all,
I wanted to share my first proper FPV flight which happened today at the Chesterfield Bando (thanks @TheBinman for organising it).
Also, thank you @Foley for letting me try your Neo 2 with the Goggles N3 at your meet. Thank you @milkmanchris for letting me try your Avata 2 with Googles 3 at the Big Meet.

The below video is the best bits of about 1 hours worth of flying. I started off slow and jerky, but by the end I think I got much smoother and daring! I don’t think I did too badly after only flying FPV for 1 hour beforehand. Also I look great if you have never seen anybody else fly FPV before! :joy:

Firstly, no problem letting you have a go. Always good to have a fly and see what you think.

As for the video, well done. Looks great, little cringe when you got near the top of the doorway near the end.

It does look a good bando. Good bit of fun. I did see the bit of wire hanging down at one point, I would probably hit that.

That bit of wire  I did hit it but luckily Drone ok.

Nice flying @WoolySheep , it was a great place to get used to it

Sacha did once, it swung the drone up through the roof where it promptly crashed, awkward recovery ensued with me sticking my head and shoulders through the gap in the roof to grab it.
there is a picture on here somewhere of that.

Nice video @WoolySheep, appetite is well and truly whetted. A Neo 2 is currently on the wish list but holding on until the Neo 3 appears then once I’ve taken the plunge I’m sure goggles will follow. What are goggles like if you wear corrective glasses? Do you keep the glasses on or…?

That video left me thinking you could play a good game of (grown-up) hide-and-seak. Somebody hides in the complex and you each take turns in looking for him, fastest wins. Now off to find out what a Bando is.

Yes, I was trying to keep closer to objects so I get used to it. The idea is to start going through smaller and smaller places.

Yes, there are lots of wires hanging down from the two bigger buildings. While they are very annoying as it is so easy to hit them, it also I think helps with learning hazard awareness and being able to divert at the last second to miss them. Nearly smacked into them a few times.

Thanks @Inca . I also own a Neo 2, it is a great drone. I may try the Goggles 3 of it to see how much it differs from the Avata 2 (apart from speed).

I wear varifocals myself as well as some single-lens VDU glasses. I tried both with the Goggles 3, even with the extender block at the top. Sadly both glasses felt like they were pressing up against the goggles and then onto my face. I ended up using the goggles without my glasses.
I do find though as a result not everything is in focus. I have altered it so the text and icons at the bottom of the screen are just readable, but the text at the top are a little worse. My thoughts are that the two battery levels, the signal strength and the distance from the floor is all I really care about. The rest is good to know, but not as important.

This is me adjusting the focus levels after take off.

I do love the idea of playing hide & seek. The only issue is the battery time. A Neo 2 might last only last 12 minutes, whereas an Avata 2 might get 20 minutes. A Woop would last even less.

Just meens an abandond place that is good to fly at, in, and around.

Do you not like the thought of contact lenses ? Just for your flying,
I tried lenses once / twice but it’s the putting fingers in eyeballs kinda thing ( not for flying ) just in general :grimacing::rofl:

Have you inserted the corrective lens, that were included in the box ?

I found that they sorted the focus for me

I might just be lucky, I’ve been short sighted for ever but as I get older I’m increasingly struggling with close up stuff too, but the goggles 3 are great for my eyes.

I just trial-and-errored to find my corrective level for each eye (close left eye, twist right eye knob until things are in focus, then use IPD slider to get everything centred, then repeat for other eye) then fine adjust with both eyes open if needed. Then just lock the two knobs by pushing in and turning and never think about it again (unless I lend someone else the goggles).

I use the same process with my 04x Pros and it works great there too, but you don’t get the feedback on-screen of the correction level so it’s a bit like a trip to the opticians (clearer now? How about now?) and the adjusters don’t lock on those goggles so I often have to set it back up at the start of a session.

Thanks @WoolySheep and others. I’m a long way away from being able to get goggles so I guess between now and then I’ve a lot of time to try them out and see if they work. Thinking about it apart from my varifocals I’ve also a VDU pair and a pair for target shooting, hopefully something will work. Since getting this Mini 4, my first drone, as I drive around the country side I find myself spotting places to park and places to fly. I can see myself looking for bandos now!

I tried contacts many years ago. Sadly I has a stigmatism. I tried I think it was three different companies who designed them for stigmatism, but just couldn’t get on with them.

Yes, they are on now and were yesterday. I do find that they make it a lot clearer when fitted.

Yes, just trial an error. When flying, as long as I can see dangling wire or rope a second before I hit it, that is all I care about really!
