Flight Plan for DJI Drones - APP?

I just spotted this app on the apple store and wondered if anyone had used it - it has 3 recommendations, but it’s a paid app so buyer beware and all that.

It’s called “Flight Plan for DJI Drones” and seems to be a Litchi equivalent. It’s UKP 11.99 to buy.

I quite like the functionality, but wouldn’t use it live until I get feedback from more experienced eyes?

The app is by “Beyond the Cube” and they can be found here: Beyond the Cube

Curiously, when you go to the Apple store online it now shows 3.9 out of 5 with 29 ratings. Some of them are a little ugly, but I seem to remember that happened with Litchi at some point in the past.

Bear in mind that DJI don’t support 3rd party apps, so if you have the Care Refresh package you won’t be covered in the event of a crash/ failure etc. Just something to bear in mind

Oh, that’s an important point. Thanks, I didn’t know this. :+1:

Can you post the evidence for that statement?

As in - why make the SDK available for 3rd party apps if they don’t support the concept.

Also - this suggest it might not be a problem : How to cancel/mute Mini 2 - 20% battery alert? (DJI MINI 2) - #6 by clinkadink

What part of that DJI statement are you querying?

That’s a forum - I see no DJI evidence.

The YT relates to a Beta version. I believe Litchi chuck in a disclaimer on using that at your own risk.

I’ve seen this posted many times, but as yet, like @OzoneVibe, I’ve yet to see any evidence of this. There are 3rd party APPS, then there are 3rd party APPS that have been created using the SDK that DJI themselves have released for the purpose of developing 3rd party APPS. The video that @clinkadink linked to above is one such APP that was developed using DJI’s Software Development Kit (SDK), as are the other popular alternatives. In fact I don’t think there is an APP, other than those developed to defeat certain regional restrictions, that have not been authored using DJI’s own SDK.

I wrote to DJI quite some time ago concerning this issue as I know they have something along the lines of this in the T&C’s of their Refresh plan. I pointed out that we are buying the hardware and it is this that is warranted. The software is not provided at the point of purchase but instead has to be downloaded. In the case of the iOS version this is from a third party, and in the case of Android only available from an uncertified source. So if the software is part and parcel of the product then that should also bee warranted, and in the case of an update not functioning correctly (which seems to happen with every release) would in effect allow the user to claim recompense commensurate with the amount of time the user was unable to use the product. If DJI were to go this route then they’d would have long since gone bankrupt. Needless to say DJI never replied.

@99_Drones Oh look! Once again we the paying public are left between a rock and a hard place :confounded:

It kinda puts me off buying any of this sort of thing when it is governed, not by good intentions, but rather by the get-out clause, invariably in the small print.

Totally understand what you’re saying.

Did you read that thread to it’s conclusion where DJI offered a warranty repair?

It’s covered/specified under DJI’s standard after-sales/service policies. This has been confirmed by various YouTubers who’ve contacted DJI directly about this clause as it relates to third-party apps such as Litchi etc.

Just because DJI release an SDK doesn’t mean they are endorsing third-party applications or cover damage caused by them. Yes, it’s a strange position from an end-user’s point of view, but entirely standard business practice.

"What This After-Sales Policy Does NOT Cover

Failure of, or damage caused by, any third party products, including those that DJI may provide or integrate into the DJI product at your request."

Yet DJI offered a warranty repair to someone in these very circumstances

If you read through their policy with regard to items excluded from warranty repairs it’s clear the left hand has no idea what the right hand is doing. Apparently any coverage is void even if the fault was caused by software provided at point of sale or an authorised download, such as that from the DJI site itself
