Flying a DJI Mini 2 in the centre of Ipswich?

Hello there… I’m Cameye based in Ipswich.
Am wondering if anyone knows what the restricitons are to fly a DJI Mini 2 in Ipswich City Center?
I want to film some artists and artwork…
Just got my drone last week - so totally new to all this.

Thank you in advance

Hi @cameye and welcome to Grey Arrows :wave:t2:

We have two very good apps that can answer this question for you

The first, is to check the airspace regulations in that area. Apart from the stadium there appear to be no airspace issues:

The second, is to check whether you can fly a particular model of drone under particular circumstances.

You can find the answer to that question by using Good 2 Go:

@cameye - Welcome to GADC :+1: :+1: :+1:

You can’t fly within 50m of a crowd of people, only the artists involved in the shoot.

You can fly a DJI Mini 2 over Crowds in a City centre as its less than 250 games if you have the appropriate registration. You don’t need an A2C as the drone is only 242 Grams. You will need to be mindful of Privacy regs because of UK GDPR. https://publicapps.caa.co.uk/docs/33/CAP2012_EU_Drone_Rules_Factsheet_V7%207.pdf

Given the OP asked about his Mini 2

The results from the excellent

Are as follows, so all good2go (see what I did there)

Nearly. You can’t fly over a crowd if they have no easy, safe place to escape to in case the drone crashes. So a busy pedestrianised town centre would be a no if there’s no open space for the crowds to run to.

See Where you can fly drones | UK Civil Aviation Authority point 5

Which is totally dependent on the location, if he’s just grabbing some artists street art in a quiet area of the city. Cool, if the street art is outside the train station, maybe not cool, but also depends on the size of the space and the amount of people, so essentially he is always ‘good to go’ but will need to make a judgement call at the actual time of intended take off, if it is actually safe to do so. You potentially could use Google if it’s near a business, as it might give you an idea of when the busiest and quietist times are to at least give you a guesstimate of best time to go.

Hey there everyone - thanks for the discussion…
From what I’ve looked into I could fly over uninvolved people, just not crowds - given that I have a DJI Mini2…
Will make sensible decisions on the day - as don’t wanna harm or scare anyone, who is just out and about.
There is a blue zone with a stadium so will have to check whether I need DJI to geo-unblock me or not…
It’s all an exploration - love this little drone!
