Has anyone flown over Edingburgh Castle ? As Drone assists says you have to pay to fly over ? Iam going next week to Edingburgh flying with Easyjet so wondering should i take my drone with me ?
Many thanks
Colin
Looking on Drone Scene ( the awesome Grey Arrows Drone Scene that is ) I donāt see anything that says you have to pay - there is two warnings though - one about the ISSS ( the volcano it all sits on really) and about people being in the area.
That would be one of the two tricky parts here - the number of people around as it could be called a group / crowed of people. Then the other part is to be out on a main road for TOAL without having to ask for permission may limit your VOLS to actually fly over the castle - fly close too sure but knowing the castle is up on a hill and the road around the back ( Johnstone Terrace ) being some what lower could make it impossible to fly over.
I think Johnstone Terrace would be your best bet for flying without having to many people challenging you unless you did it early morning / late at night
There is a small military base inside the castle boundary which is almost certainly designated MOD. As such it might be unwise to go too near the castle or overfly it. It is more spectacular looking at the castle from a stand-off position anyway.
I was there last year and saw a security guard tell someone to stop flying a drone near the castle
The Drone Map shows no restrictions on flying over the Castle. However it is 120m high so you would have to be careful where you TOAL if using a DJI drone that has height restrictions. Also crowds could be an issue so maybe a dawn flight coukd be the answer
Hi Colin
Iāve flown over the castle from Johnston Terrace car park, very few people about.
You can only cover a short distance as the rock cuts off your signal
There are other quiet areas to view the other side if you do a bit research.
Itās busy with tourists all year round so donāt fly over the esplanade.
Bring your drone as Edinburgh is full of good locations as well as the castle!
Hi!
Iāll be there in three weeks and I was wondering if I can take off and land in Princes Street Gardens if I go early in the morning (I think the park opens at 7:00 am). The thing is, Iāve seen other posts on the forum mentioning that I need to request permission from the CEC to do that
Hi csarthz i usualy take off from the car park at castle terrace back of the usher hall or you can take off in-between the art galleries at mound you dont need to contact them its a public park there are no restrictions in town
Ok, thank you @Colin1! Iāll use those points.
I was a bit concerned because I was looking around on Google Street View and saw a couple of āNo Dronesā signs: one at the entrance to the Scott Monument on Waverley Bridge, and another one near the parking area you mentioned on Kingās Stables Road.
However, those images are from 2023, so they might not be there anymore today.
āNo dronesā means no TOAL from the property; you can overfly within the CAA rules & Drone Code. And, since your flight data is recorded, you can prove you were legal if you need to (unless, of course, you werenāt legal!).
Ye the sigs were for the flypast at Edinburgh tattoo and have been taken down
I in the end took off early morning from Prinves st gardens no problem
When we were in Edinburgh last year I must admit, although I never flew over the castle, I did fly my drone over quite a few other places and was never asked not to. In fact we did have quite a few folks approach me just to see what the view from the drone was like. Always happy to oblige.
