Flying Scotsman & Scots Guardsman - Photo opp - Sunday 26.03.23

Scots Guardsman is heading home to Carnforth from York and Flying Scot goes through Carnforth in its way from Bury to York. Both due for a stop in Carnforth not far apart and both taking the Carnforth-Skipton line, with the Flying Scot passing through Wigan, Preston & Lancaster

I got the Scot’s guardsman on its way to Stratford upon Avon a couple of weeks ago. Problem with a lot of the rail tours is the steam only takes over half way through the journey. Usually pulled by a heritage diesel or electric admittedly but it’s never as impressive.

We live 10 mins from Carnforth home to a number of engines and the changeover point between diesel/electric/steam on journeys heading north. Today’s unusual, looks like both engines are going to be there together mingling with Northern services on the Furness line.

Hope the weathers better there than here. Good luck.

I’m quite surprised down here I’m never battling for a good spot (one above was on a foot crossing for eg. common sense to safety applies here) but I doubt if the flying Scotsman was about I’d need to get there several hours early as they would all come out the woodwork.

A failed attempt :man_facepalming:

I was parked up near the old Garstang and Catterall station as the Flying Scotsman was meant to stop there for a few minutes to allow trains to pass somewhere further up the line. Drone was in cine mode as I was expecting a slow approach to where the station used to be so as the train would come to a stop. I would then be able to circle around and get some decent footage whilst it was stationary. Alas, it was running late and therefore it didn’t need to stop so was going along at a fair old speed, way too quick for cine mode and by the time I had switched to normal then sport it was heading off into the distance.

I managed to see it in Lancaster station, perfect timing on the way home from lunch out with family. Tabled to stop at Lancaster, because it was late the station staff said it would be flying straight through but the signallers had other ideas and let the Morecambe train out just ahead of it. Over 5 minutes waiting just beyond the platform, not a good place for a photo.

I did consider heading up to Carnforth for another attempt but I hadn’t time to plan a location. I’d spent some time planning the first location

Or you could have got it going over Carlise bridge.

or at carnforth

I used this car park as the club is long ago closed and it’s a great spot to launch from to be by steam town.

Not me, Mini 2 was home charging it’s batteries

I did have a quick look on google and saw that area, not knowing the place didn’t know how busy it would be so went home.

Video posted. I will be doing another of the Scotsman and Guardsman at Carnforth.
