I use LR classic & photoshop, If i want to frame grab from Mavic 3 pro footage, are there any recommendations or advice?
I’ve tried searching GADC and YT and haven’t found much thats helpful
Do you mean from a video ?
Yes, I’m very new to drones and not even sure if i can choose different video settings. Its not really why I got the drone. Its pretty much that at a good many locations (e.g. coastal), you can position the drone where its not possible to stand. As a photographer it opens up many new opportunities. Ive accidentally shot some video instead of taking stills and wondered about the best way of using it it
@Rayandbar Most video editors have an option to take a screen grab. I use Davinci Resolve (a free version but very memory intensive).
Look in the file or edit menu for “Export” whilst the frame still you want is on display. It will give you an option to where you want to save it to.
Open the file in Photoshop or any software that allows you to upscale or resize and edit away.
The quality is generally good if using a 4k video as the donor.
If you dont have a video editor (DJI have the free editors Lightcut app or the Fly App) then you can use the Print Screen) function on your PC. Not usually as good but acceptable for many media uses.
Even some video players will let you take a screen grab. VCL video player does, look for an icon in the control bars around the screen of which ever software you use that looks like a camera, generally that will be the screengrab button.
Easiest way I’d say
VLC player, freeze the frame you want and Press Shift + S.
Windows has a screen grab key PrtSc
and a snipping tool
apple may have one as well
Depending on video/screen resolutions you may not get an optimal image for further use.
4k video on 1080 screen only gives 1080 image.
Another for VLC.
Download VLC Media Player from … https://www.videolan.org/
Shift+S (Windows and Linux) or Command+Alt+S (Mac) to save the frame you want. This will save an image at the resolution of the video, rather than the resolution of the screen.
CMD shift 4 ;o)
I prefer Windows Shift S for the snipping tool ;o)

Thanks guys for all your help, my Logitech K850 keyboard doesn’t have a PrtScn button which has led me to discover that I need to press Fn + insert keys, which Interestingly opens up the Snipping tool.
I wouldn’t have appreciated the screen resolution drawback of going that route though without your help.
Blockquote
So will use VLC player, as mentioned as it is best not to throw away detail especially if you are going to crop in post.
Do I have a choice of video quality on the Mavic 3 Pro and can you change the lens/ focal length mid recording? Obviously it would make sense to record at the highest resolution possible, I have 256Gb memory card so hope filesize shouldn’t be an issue
Shoot in Dlog-m. These are resolution and fps options (I film in 4k:30):
4K
Some say that 4K is the best resolution for the Mavic 3 Pro because it’s more compatible and produces better quality than 5K.
5K
Some say that 5K can be processed to look better than 4K in terms of detail, but the difference is small. 5K files have a higher bitrate than 4K, but the 5K on the Mavic 3 isn’t in a 16:9 format, so you’ll need to crop it unless you film in Cinema 5K. 5K files can be large, so you’ll need to be prepared to handle the additional cost and computational power required to use them.
4K30
Some say that 4K30 is the most flexible resolution because it works in almost every scenario and gives you a cinematic feel.
You can also consider other settings when shooting with the Mavic 3 Pro, such as:
Frame rate: Some prefer to film at 50 frames per second so they can slow down their clips later.
Format: Some recommend using the 4:3 format instead of 16:9 because 4:3 uses the entire image and can be cropped in post.
ISO: Some recommend keeping your ISO as low as possible.
Aperture: Some say that the image gets sharper at about f 5.6 through f9.
Probably not if the intention is to grab screenshots off it
Better to shoot still if you want stills, eh?
But you can get very interesting stills via frame grabs that you will miss trying to take a still
That is the BIGGEST annoyance with EVERY DJI DRONE!
No ability to take still whilst taking video.
It’s been on moderate priced DSLRs for ages.
It’s also been moaned about by me MANY times on here.
Other issues are that you may want ND filters for your video, but you don’t want irremovable blur because you’re capturing video with the 180 rule at 25fps, so you have a 1/50sec shutter speed.
If you’re happy with a 4k file instead of a 20MP still
Is file size an issue in 2024?
Only if you want to try print a grab from a video reasonably
After being told by more learned photographers than myself, (thats most people ) that you should always shoot in Dlog, I actually stopped shooting in Dlog m, as it was a PITA to colourgrade, even with the DJI LUT. However, I wondered, if you’re taking a screenshot after you’ve finished peeing about with colour grading, does it actually matter, or, as
there is supposed to be more dynamic range in DLog m, Will that not benefit the final image even if its a screengrab?
