My first thought is if you gave that lad a ladder and a basket he would be a lot quicker at getting the fruit and rather more cost effective!

Precisely.
Robotic pickers I get. But a drone to reach just a few feet seems overkill … and slow.
And unless Argentina has changed dramatically in the two days since I saw a news report of millions impoverished by inflation (and politics) there’s a few million looking for jobs at very low pay rates.
Of course, it may be a proof of concept for a task that’s more drone relevant.
