Well it is the US! Not sure what the Gun:Drone ratio is but pretty large I guess so expect many more such fly by shootings.

If he shot at the aircraft with ashotgun and brought it down the craft can’t have been very high or distant. The 50 metre rule - which I believe they have in some non-metric form in the States - should have kept the drone out of range.
