Couldn't find a decent place to TOAL from, so settled for the carpark. The signal is not great if you choose to fly from there.
Goodrich Castle takes its name from an English landowner, Godric, who built the first castle here in the late 11th century. Its fine Norman keep was added a generation later.
When William de Valence, a French nobleman, rebuilt the castle in the late 13th century, he created one of the most up-to-date castles of his day. Its impressive defences enclosed residential buildings of great complexity and sophistication.
Much of the castle was ruined by mortar fire in 1646, when Parliamentarians besieged it during the Civil War. Its Royalist garrison surrendered after a two-month siege.
Parliament used a locally made cannon called Roaring Meg to bombard the garrison into submission. The only surviving mortar from the Civil War, it is now on display in the castle courtyard.
In the 18th and 19th centuries the overgrown ruins became a magnet for visitors, attracted by the Wye valley’s historic monuments and untamed scenery.
The originator declared that this location was not inside a Flight Restriction Zone at the time of being flown on 22/10/2023. It remains the responsibility of any pilot to check for any changes before flying at the same location.
Id like to fly here too. Does the car park @clinkadink you mention toaling from technically not come under english heritage? And what would be the difference of just walking down the field closer to the river and toal from there? Im guessing the field is either land own by english heritage aswel and if not a farm near by and so privately owned. @Kirky where did you toal from?
If I can remember rightly Jack there’s a little path/lane outside up the side of it & a little turn around at a dead end road, would you like me to check it out ? Although there are( was ) no problems there & there was a few public around but everything was fine & dandy, it was on a Sunday btw
Ive just been looking at the google maps and trying to figure it out. Sunday ok, Ive got a couple of floating holiday days left and might use one if them midweek. Cheers
Ah yea right I remember this one as we done a few castles the same day & this one was a bit of a nightmare,
I myself went to the top of the car park where there’s an entrance & lots of trees woodland with various openings ( take your pick kinda thing ) I TOAL’D through ( or in between rather ) some trees “ sounds worse than what it is “ the trees are very spaced out from what I can remember & due to the time of year hardly any leaves either so it’s easy to see, there’s also a slight embankment you can walk up, it’s doable no problems if you feel confident enough,
Failing that at the end of the car park as soon as you go straight up you can see the castle, sounds ag but it’s not
Sounds good thankyou. Its not that easy looking at google maps and trying to plan out a trip. Places always look and feel different when you get there.
Yes I just checked Google maps & it’s not as bad when your there, if you walk through those woods which is less than 2 minutes there’s a path that is even closer to the castle which is not on their boundary I believe, it’s in between the castle & the river wye
