I always wondered what lay behind those gates opposite Longniddry Bents . Do you need permission to fly there ? I’m coming up to Prestonpans / Port Seton on Thursday for a short stay and this would make an interesting place to do a wee video on ( coming back up again at the end of June as well ):wink:

Go past the main entrance for about a mile you will see a right turn take it, will take you to the estate shop, keep driving till next car park , then get out and walk following the path stay on the path you will see a pyramid walk past it and keep following the path till you come to the estate.

Aye, but do you need permission to fly there ?

I’ve flown there on and off for 7 yrs and I’ve never asked

I’ve also spoken with the manager of the estate private groundsman, who thanked me for flying over the estate

No, at least not according to Dronescene, even with class D and dji’s stupid layer turned on. They might ask you to leave if you are TOAL from their land, if they do just pack up and find a suitable public place to TOAL. Enjoy your flight, weather looks decent :ok_hand:

Trust me you don’t need to ask. if you fly responsibly,I’ve flown there since 2016 and in total I’ve flown 10 times, you can walk all around the estate which is big and open to the public to walk around free, you pay to view the house only . Look up drone assist or drone scene there are no flight limitations , The radio control flying club is near but out with flight controls

If you are on a private estate why not, just out of courtesy, ask if it’s okay to fly. If they say no, then as Darren @DazC said just go find a public place to TOAL. I often find people are more agreeable when you ask first and sometimes take an interest in what you are doing.

That’s my usual response from people too when I ask, always interested (well not always but mostly) A lot of them ask me to give them a picture too.
Believe it or not I just got given permission to fly over an HES site. I only asked because I was being mischievous. He must have been pissing himself while typing his reply, “of course you can, it’s shut to the public just now and covered in scaffold while we carry out some renovations, it wont look very photogenic”

Don’t think they would be impressed with Joe blogs driving 1 mile up to the house to ask if it’s OK to fly.As I’ve said I’ve been flying there since 2016 ,no one has ever asked me ,and i like to think its because I fly in a correct manner ,I’ve even spoken to the private company that looks after the estate grounds and are very happy with me. If I felt the need to ask at anytime I would , so as I’ve flown there 10 times and never upset anyone I think I more in tune in what the crack is please give me some credit at 62 yrs old.

Don’t think anyone was having a personal crack at you John, or at least thats not what was intended. My reply and @Drumsagard were aimed at the op, certainly not you. You crack on and do whatever suits you and whatever you’re comfortable with, would never try to tell you, or anyone else, otherwise.
We were just pointing out that sometimes, being polite and asking can get a very welcoming response. If it’s not forthcoming then find some public space to toal, thats all.

The beach entry to the estate is for private use only , the rest of the estate is open to the puplic

:joy: He’s started something now though, you can always go back when the renovation work is done and ask for permission again :grinning:

Definitely not getting at you John @jaybee, I was just pointing out it’s sometimes better asking for permission first if on private property. I email locations/venues etc. in advance for permission for my wedding work, but have done it too just when I want to fly. Means when I turn up on the day all my permissions are in place and I can crack on. Also keeps everything legit for my insurance.

The onice isn’t just on the drone owner, the land owner has to make it clear if its ok to fly or not. So it works both ways the estate owners at gosford have made there land open to the general public with minimum rules . Also help you need a car to get to gosford house so it doesn’t attract lets say inconsiderate people.just because you ask once doesn’t mean it’s ok all the time .landowner soon get pissed off

It’s easy to get lost or go the long way to get to where you hope to be, but there is mush to see and worth it ps you won’t see it all in one day as its 8 square miles

Hey, I asked a simple question, whether you need permission to fly there. ( as I’m going back to my home town for a short visit ) I always try and ask for permission to fly at sites I haven’t visited before. It certainly wasn’t a dig at John either, just a simple question.
Only last week I was at Swarkestone Causeway ( near me) and happened to be sitting in the front ( massive) garden of the pub there, the Crewe and Harpur. I asked if it was ok to fly from there. The answer was “No , you might upset the other people sat at other tables.” I politely thanked the landlady, and didn’t fly from there.
