Green laser

I have been a commercial stills photographer for over 30 years. I have recently purchased a Mini 4 pro and only just been playing around with it in the garden etc to get used to it. I have insurance and flyer id and operator id.

Tonight I sent it up to 90m and I could see someone pointing a green laser at it through the screen. Now I’m naive about this, what’s that all about?

What do you mean by that?

Some NIMBY was probably doing it, a green laser can damage the camera sensor on the drone.

But it was no where near their property. It looked like at least a half a mile away from where I live as the crows fly.

It’s a popular response by Karen and Ken, mostly in community Facebook groups

Might be worth reporting it to the CAA. Not only is it endangering an aircraft (yours, which could be caused to crash and hurt someone by it) but also potentially missing your drone but blinding the pilot of a commercial jet full of passengers. I think it’s illegal to shine a laser deliberately in someone’s eyes, isn’t it, and it would be shining in your eyes via the drone camera and transmission of live image to your smartphone or controller screen. Just a thought.

It might not be the best idea to fly from your garden, though, despite it being perfecly legal and convenient. Some neighbours may well find it provocative, basically because they’re twats, sorry but there it is. Better to fly from local park or an open area; Ken & Karen might well be on patrol there as well but they will not be able to accuse you of any sort of nuiscance flying, spying, or perving.

It’s a balance between exercising your given rights and freedoms and not being overtly provocative, or seen by others as being overtly provocative. Common sense is probably the best guide in such matters, and deliberately seeking confrontaion is not common sense, so let them deliberately seek as much confrontation as they like and then take the moral high ground by not rising to the bait, would be my advice, and fly your drone over the park where there’s likely to be more space anyway.

And what will they do? Probably nothing. Possibly report to the police, if they do anything, so just report to the police.

But - what will they do? Probably nothing.

If you recorded video of it that reveals their location, there’s a small chance. But they’re more likely to  and do nothing.

I agree with @OzoneVibe …. Neither will do anything even if it’s reported. It’s not like the Police or the CAA will flood resources into investigating it.

Personally I never fly from my garden for a myriad of reasons. There’s a vast amount of places outside a ones garden to be explored with your drone. :slightly_smiling_face:

Yeah, I was flying on a local promenade at sunrise and got accused of perving. Bellend “vanlifer” in a clapped out half converted transit decided to open the back doors so his missus could see the sunrise without getting out of bed.

Dude, it’s a public promenade between you and the sunrise. Anyone can walk past. If you don’t want people seeing your wife’s saggy tits tell her to put some clothes on first.

Thanks all.i have only flown it from the garden a couple of times just as I haven’t had chance to go anywhere with it. The direct neighbours are perfectly fine with it, in fact one is talking about buying one.

I am just amazed that someone can accurately shine a laser at a drone’s camera that is 90 metres up and about half a mile away.

Sniper :gun:

Yeah don’t worry about it, kids with laser pens and nothing else to do
