Grey Mare's Tail, Moffat - flown with NTS permission - October 2024

A long day out on Tuesday to film a spectacular waterfall - one that needed some planning and liaison with NTS to get permission to fly from their land.

Grey Mare’s Tail is a 60m waterfall in the Scottish Borders, about 3 hrs drive from home. We applied for permission to fly about a month ago via email - use the link on the website.

The lady responsible for arranging things came back within 24 hrs asking a few questions - was it a commercial flight, did we have Op ID and Public Liability Insurance - they need £2M cover - what drones and how many were in the air at any time, and what day and time were we wanting to book.

I responded with all the info, apart from the preferred date as I needed to see what the weather would be like, so we were approved, and a specific date would be agreed on the Thursday the week before. We were put in touch with the local Ranger and their Manager, who were very happy to accommodate us.

By Thursday the weather forecast was looking ok for Tuesday, but not perfect, so we set that day for our flight, and were then informed that the Moffatt road was shut between 9am and 4pm, so an earlier start than planned was required…

We left home at 530am, and arrived at the Falls at 830am, to be greeted by one of the rangers, who was happy to see us and looking forward to seeing what we could capture. It was dry, with some clouds, cold and fairly windy, so we wrapped up and set ourselves up for the flight…

Air 3 had 2 flights, the first and last of the location, and the AVATA1 flew 2 batteries, to get in closer and personal…

It is an interesting site, and one I hope we have done justice…

I reckon you’re getting the hang of the drone video malarky :joy:

Sensational video with some pretty neat flying

Many thanks too for sharing your pre-flight planning - will hopefully give novice drone pilots the confidence to take on similar projects - a great example of what can be done

Thanks for the kind words, I can’t use the excuse I am new or a beginner anymore methinks…

One of the things the folks at NTS were really happy with was the fact we would tell folks about the opportunity to fly, but to make sure you had permission, its a no brainer really

Lovely video :+1:

I’ve climbed up past the waterfall about 15 years ago. These days I just ride past on the motorbike  :motorcycle: as it’s a well trod great riding road.

Lovely video (yet again) :star_struck:

Also, good to hear that NTS was pretty painless. They’ve been in my “sounds a bit of an off-putting faff” file. I may need to recategorise them

Thanks… Yes, pretty painless and actually no issue at all, just make sure you have PLI in place before you apply - GADC members insurance is totally fine for this…

Thank you kindly… I am enjoying the learning curve with the drones and editing, think I am getting the hang of it now…

I am very fortunate that my hubby is as supportive as he is… I picked a darn good one

No charges for a non-commercial flight

Thank you kindly…

Very nice Suzanne. I can confirm that the NT Scotland is very different to the English one. I got permision last year to fly around a number of their castles. As you say they want chapter and verse which is fair enough but very helpful. Definitely worth asking.

Thank you, yes, definitely worth asking, the English NT could definitely learn a few things!

The English NT have the idiots in Whitehall to contend with, they were condemned for adding information about their properties’ relationship to the slave trade and colonialism, this is not news to most people with a passing acquaintance with history… oh to be in Scotland! Beautiful filming.

Ahhh, I thought you did already. I originally bought a drone to film in Ireland, but realised it was more difficult than imagined, so what I had in my minds eye, firmly stayed there  I’m returning next year and it’s practice, practice, practice until then - and, watching Albion Drone footage, one day I might be 1/10th as good … yeah, in my dreams

Lol, I have only been flying for just over 2 years, so if I can do it, then anyone can… Thanks for the compliment though…

The key is to watch what others are doing, dissect it, see the moves they are making and the shots they are getting, and practice them for yourself - lots of practice - and you will find your own style along the way…

Also, watch Ian in London and a few others who have good instructional videos, these will help you to set up your drones for the best results…

Good luck and enjoy the trip when it arrives…
