Harlech Castle, Gwynedd - Added to Castles and Fortifications in Wales

I have just added this to the map of places to fly your drone at Drone Scene:

Harlech Castle is one of the great medieval fortresses of Wales, standing high above the coast of Gwynedd with views stretching across Cardigan Bay and towards the mountains of Eryri.

Built for King Edward I from 1283 and designed under Master James of St George, Harlech formed part of Edward’s great castle-building programme following the conquest of Wales. Its dramatic position was a major part of its defence, with sheer cliffs on the western side and the famous Way from the Sea allowing men and supplies to reach the castle by boat.

Harlech would later become one of the great strongholds of the Wars of the Roses, resisting Yorkist forces until 1468 in the famous siege traditionally associated with Men of Harlech. Its military story continued into the English Civil War, when Colonel William Owen held the castle for the Royalist cause until its surrender in 1647.

The castle is managed by Cadw and there are a multiple of TOAL points, the best of which, I’ve pinned. Its sits in the middle of the EGD217F LLANBEDR Airspace Restriction that is activated via NOTAMs, so best check before you fly. I contacted prior to my flight on 01341-241356 SUA Authority: Snowdonia Airspace but the applicable NOTAM’s will give up-to-date contact details. The Castle has a ‘no drones’ policy but pick your moments to fly and you should be okay.

Harlech is not a big town, but has many places to eat, drink and be merry! Parking close to the Castle can be tricky and the spaces available at the entrance fill up fast. I parked a little futher down the hill (pinned) and also outside the Harlech Sports Center on the other side of the road from the base of the cliff (also pinned and great VLOS).

The originator declared that this location was not inside a Flight Restriction Zone at the time of being flown on 11/07/2026. It remains the responsibility of any pilot to check for any changes before flying at the same location. Landowner permission may be required before taking off.
