Based on what I’ve observed online and from some personal challenges when I’ve emailed Land Owners I’ve encountered, it’s essential to seek and obtain permission from landowners before flying ‘on’ their property. Out of politeness operating from public areas and adhering to legal flight regulations, it’s polite to ask. However, you’ll often be met with polite refusals. A good example, St Mary’s Stadium, I popped into reception just to say I’ve got flight approval today and the lady said, that’s fine but from the public area, so that was all good.
You’re taking off from a public space, there’s no flight restrictions around St Mary’s Stadium. I personally wouldn’t be informing them of my intention to fly over or around it.
Just don’t do it on match days. ![]()
Five Acres by Oasis Lordshill is a good open space to practice in. Which part of Southampton are you in?
Thanks, Kirky
I am getting used to it.
Still unsure about some SSSI areas as I can’t find information on their respective Council websites. Longford Castle surroundings (Britford Water Meadows) are an example of this.
Winchester Rd.
That spot sounds interesting. I may go there for a walk this afternoon
Click on the SSSI on Drone Scene and following the links to find specifics details for each one. No need to look at a council site.
With some of them it is not very clear to me, like the one below. Am I allowed to fly within that area?
Welcome to the GADC group ![]()
You need to read the citation for the SSSi, some are for rocks or fish etc, I suspect that one will include nesting birds. So, for the next few months at least, it’ll be a no.
The New Forest is covered by lots of SSSI and a byelaw that rules most of it out too
I’ve been keeping away from the perambulation boundary since I started this hobby and have never had an issue.
Yeah in case of the New forest it is quite clear. You just need to google it.
For the SSSI I pointed out above seems a bit more complicated. I havent found any reference to it
The citation can be accessed from droneAssist and dronesafetymap.com
Gives you this https://designatedsites.naturalengland.org.uk/PDFsForWeb/Citation/1002342.pdf
Mainly for grass, but also winter feeding grounds and birds nesting.
You’ll find this of interest re the New Forest …
That’s helpful, thanks
Agreed.
Bar the Isle of Wight Council, most seem to be anti-drone anyway.
