Hi Everyone, I’m Ben and I’m adding drones to my list of lockdown hobbies, which also include archery, gaming, game design, 3D modelling, photography, videography, writing quizzes, Dremel rotary tools, basic wood working, making music on my PC, standing on a vibrating thing and pilates.
During lockdown I got a little Revell Control Spot 2.0 thinking it’d be a good beginner drone to try things out. Anyone who knows this will know it is a sport/stunt type drone, and not exactly great for beginners! Anyway, after charging the battery every 4 or 5 mins I got bored of crashing it round the house. After a lot of Youtube videos I decided to take the plunge and get a Mini 2, and so here I am! I’ve flown it round the house successfully for a couple of days and planning to take it outside for the first time tomorrow! Look forward to chatting to some of you in these forums!

And welcome to the group. I’m in the adjacent valley, over the Moor in Otley. Being into Archery am I right in assuming you shoot in St Ives Park? It’s something I’ve contemplated doing, and having a friend with a similar Spinal injury as myself and seeing how it improved her health to the point where she is now a major competition shooter, I’ve often thought about exploring this further.
Good choice going with the Mini2. I’ve had mine since February but it’s only recently I’ve come to realise it’s true potential. Prior to this epiphany I’d come close to selling it, unused, on quite a few occasions. It would have also been the first drone I’d have sold from my collection.
As long as the wind stays at the forecasted 2mph to 4mph for the Aire Valley tomorrow it should be a good day for your first outdoor flight with the Mini2.
Hi Nidge, it was seeing Aire Valley Archers that sparked my initial curiosity but due to COVID they have had very few opportunities to accept beginners. Before you can join a club you must complete a beginners course (for safety as much as anything else). I called up Phoenix Archery in Burnley and was able to complete a beginners course there. Very competitively priced (I’m a bargain hunter)! Very friendly and I got pretty much all my kit from their shop. Now I’ve passed the course I’m just waiting to be able to be assessed by the club and then hopefully I can join.
I was low during lockdown and also really out of shape. Having the archery lessons to go to really helped pick me up and has helped get me more active. You can modify the draw weights on the bow to find what is right for you. And then as you build strength you can up the draw weights if you want. I would really recommend it.
Welcome to a really cool group Ben. Bingley and surrounding area is my neck of the woods on a fairly regular basis so if I see another Mini2 flying about you might hear me calling lol.
Thanks Paul, it does seem like a great group already after just a few days. If you’re ever in the area let me know, would be interesting to see how you go about doing things
