Hollow Pond - Leyton Flats - Added to Lakes and Reservoirs in London

I have just added this to the map of places to fly your drone at Drone Scene:

Land owner permission requirements unknown.

Very nice park with boating lake and an abundance of undisturbed TOAL places.

You can fly over the complete park and lake within VLOS and the southern part of the park is ideal for pictures of the Stratford/London high-rises.

The originator declared that this location was not inside a Flight Restriction Zone at the time of being flown on 14/07/2021. It remains the responsibility of any pilot to check for any changes before flying at the same location.

Anyone up for a flight in this area anytime this month? I would love to take some cinematic shots in this area.

Fire up a new thread in the Meetups category @doctormako - you’ll get more eye on it

I’ve flown here too @legal_eyes

Whoops! I’ve not actually flown here @legal_eyes. Sorry about that :pensive:

Thanks for marking this, went to look this morning. High up saw the city in the distance rising out of the mist.

That picture in the middle is pretty cool, I like that

Some risks involved in this site:
It’s an SSSI.
It’s City of London property so you need TOAL permission.
Best to TOAL and fly from outside the park while avoiding overflying moving vehicles.
The SSSI boundary is smaller than the park in places, which helps a bit.

Let’s help mitigate some of those risks

Since March of 1990, Natural England have it classified as nothing more than for biological interest reasons, according to the SSSI registration details on Drone Scene.

If my understanding is correct, it’s managed by Waltham Forest Borough Council? (don’t quote me, more research needed)

If it is, then thankfully Waltham Forest Borough Council have no byelaws and no policies relating to the recreational use of drones on their land (byelaw and policy details also on Drone Scene).

Are you familiar with the area, Greg?

If so, it’d be great if you could add some useful markers on the map for this location please, to help other members who might want to fly here

I fly in one nearly 7 days a week, it’s never stopped me from taking off. As per what @PingSpike has mentioned.

The Corporation of London do have an interest there… But it’s quite possible WFBC might maintain it under an agreement. :man_shrugging:

Whether WF or CofL is immaterial.
WF council bylaws do not allow drone flying in its parks, either. They refer you to their film unit, whose prices can be viewed online. K’ching!
A workaround is to use a TOAL point outside the park but that will impact your VLOS reach.

That would be the common sense solution anyway… Nobody has suggested it’s impossible. :+1:

As above:

I would just comment that every SSSI is different. It’s worth clicking through to the detailed writeup of the site for details.
Even then it can be unclear what constitutes disturbance of flora and fauna on certain sites.
This site is surrounded on all sides by heavy traffic, which suggests that the SSSI achieves little by keeping out drones. Sadly it also means there are a lot of eyes on you here so care is advised.

Section 36 relates to aircraft and could be used against drone flyers.

I live in an area of a plethora of SSSI’s.. You don’t think I do my research?

I’ll try to add some notes when I have use of a bigger screen than just my phone.

I’m sure you do.
But it sounded like what you were auggesting was that it’s okay to fly here because you fly in another SSSI.

No need, thank you

As already discussed above, the FOI response from Waltham Forest Borough Council clearly states they do not have any byelaws or any policies relating to the recreational use of drones from their land.

There are no additional bylaws enforced by the council

Again, as above, it’s been registered as biological for the last 30+ years.

If you don’t want to fly here, don’t.

@GVG_Air we’re going round in circles here
