How did my Mini 2 recover from this?

Hi All,

Was flying on the Isle of Wight on Monday evening, had an unexpected encounter that I do not wish to repeat soon.

This is the first time this has happen to me and cant for the life of me work out how the drone recovered, but came home it did.

An all too regular occurrence I believe, praise be the DJI tech gods.

Welcome to GADC, @scambo / David.

I edited your post to create the YT embedded player. Just the URL is needed …

Provided the motors/props remain intact, there’s no reason a DJI drone (and many others) won’t recover.

I’ve even seen one launched by throwing it up in the air (with motors idling) - and as soon as it detects is falling it rights itself and hovers.

Nice video, btw.

What drone are you flying - an all grey one may be confused with a competitor, especially during mating/nesting season. Some bright colour on the drone is said to help deter such attacks

It was a Mini 2 … according to the thread title.

I missed that, too, initially. :facepunch:

Amazing subject and great footage. Love a shipwreck.

I could almost hear the attacker shouting the bird equivalent of “OI! YOU!” as it came into frame. Great that the drone was unharmed.

Thank you, that was my fault for not checking what I pasted.

Thanks for the comment, I will be uploading a video to YouTube soon with more footage from Monday’s flight.

I am flying a DJI Mini 2, I believe that the birds might had been nesting in the bow of the ship. I also had a strobe fitted to the underside of the drone but I think this made the birds even angrier, I was in fact the other side of the river, if the drone had gone down, it would probably still be there now.

Sorry Guys,
I was just attempting to remove my old channel from YouTube but managed to all of my content, the video link above is therefore broken.

The new link is below.

Thanks for viewing

Updated the first post with the new link. :+1:

My drone is fully wrapped in a fluorescent colour and still certain birds will have a pop including what i discovered today down by the coast,Oystercatchers.

Nice vid :+1:, I know the feeling of the bird strike, only a week ago I was on the beach at Rhos on sea, these Herring gulls were taking an interest in me 2S, plus it was windy, I did all the usual stuff, taking it up etc, which after a few minutes they generally get bored and do one. But this one really didn’t like me drone, and as I was literally hovering to land, this gull swooped and made contact on top of the drone. The drone dipped a little and righted itself. On landing, I found blood on me props and outer shell of me 2S, don’t know if I chopped owt off, but I’d bet there’s a gull in Rhos on sea missing some toes or something :joy:. Herring gulls I do not like! Haha

Hi Leylo, glad you liked the video, I totally agree Herring Gulls, a few years ago I was waiting for a Ferry at Southampton Quay, I had about half hour to wait so I decided to sit at the end of the doc and have something to eat, a gull then landed on the railing near me, checked me out then called very loudly, within a few minute there was about 50 birds all wanting my food.

As for the drone, there was some damage to one of the front left props, defiantly was pecked at, I was very lucky.

Probably the worse birds so far, I’ve found, herring gulls, pigeons just gang up in a herd and fly around you each playing ’ let’s see who can get closest to the drone thing’, crows, unless nesting, aren’t to bad, ravens also and black headed gulls seem quite chilled? So far!. But I may be forced to dust off the air rifle and pack it with the bucket and spade next time I go the beach…only joking…

Cormorants just couldn’t care less.
