This may well be a foolish question, even though there aren’t any …
I am flying a DJI mini 2 with the Maven app for iOS.
What I want to do is set the copilot to follow a moving boat I’m not aboard. In other words I can’t set the track me mode, which follows the controller.
I know how to set a point of interest and have the drone frame it; but can’t find anything that suggests what happens when the poi moves.
Is a poi just a set of coordinates, or can I set an actual object ?
You can probably tell I’ve googled this so much that my brain has curdled. Hopefully someone here will know the answer.
Ps what a joy this club is!
Be sure not to confuse “Follow Me” mode with “Active Track”, they are two very different things
The Mini 2 doesn’t support Active Track with the DJI Fly app, as there are no obstacle avoidance sensors on it.
Litchi does support Active Track on the Mini 2.
I’ve never used the Maven app, does it support Active Track?
Here’s a video on Litchi / Mini 2 / Active Track which may help:
Is that Tim Cook?
And it works pretty well on bigger objects like vehicles.
How big/fast boat we talking about ?
Manual might be your best friend
To be a bit clearer - I know both litchi and maven will use GPS to track the controller/phone.
But what I want to do is tell the mini 2 to focus on an object (in this case a sailing dinghy) and follow that, not the controller
I think I’m requesting the impossible
The answer has already been posted for you?
Litchi should do it
Track
In Track mode, Litchi uses state of the art computer vision algorithms to track a selected object on the video preview and keep it in the frame.*
You have the choice to either fly the aircraft manually while Litchi keeps the object in the frame, use the Orbit feature to instruct the aircraft to Orbit around the tracked object, or start Follow where the drone will autonomously follow the tracked object.*
The aircraft rotation (yaw) and gimbal pitch angle are controlled by Litchi as well as the gimbal yaw for drone models that support it.*
Enter the Track mode by pressing the Flight Mode icon at the top left of the Litchi screen. Select “Track”.
Running a Track session
Select the object you wish to track on the video preview using the Pinch gesture (with 2 fingers, see image below).
When you are happy with the selection, release your fingers from the screen and Track will automatically start.
It is recommended to start Track while the aircraft is airborne.
To select a different object, simply start the procedure again.
Info To recenter the current selection, double tap where you want the new object center to be on the video preview.
For optimal tracking, ensure the background scene is not too cluttered and that there is enough contrast between the tracked object and its surroundings. It is also important to select your object carefully. Avoid including too much of the background in the selection and make sure the object you want to track is not too small on the video preview.
Crikey - I simply hadn’t read the destructions properly!
Track in Litchi is exactly what I wanted - thank you so much everyone.
Track seems to mean something different in Maven, however - there doesn’t seem to be that “pinch to select” feature. It’s a shame, as I’ve found Maven much better at Follow than Litchi. Still more research fun to be had…
But you’ll not be using Follow, in either app, you’ll be using tracking instead
Let us know how you get on?
I will. At first glance with the new information, it seems Track means something sifferent in Litchi and Maven. In the latter there doesn’t seem to be a Tracking functiopn, just follow - which is exactly as it seems.
In Litchi, Track allows you to select a visual object to follow.
I’m going to try both apps out with both Follow and Track tomorrow; and will post what I find.
Thanks again for info, chaps!
As promised, I braved the weather and tested both Follow and Track modes in the Maven and Litchi apps.
Conclusion: Litch does have some good points; but it can’t track or follow for toffee. Plus when you turn on record after eventually getting follow set up - it turns it off again! You have to start video first. Which is silly
Maven can and does follow. It is easy and obvious to set up, and follows flawlessly. BUT: I remain confused about what it defines as Follow and what it defines as Track.
Sadly my teeth were chattering by this stage. I’ll sit in the warm and read the Maven manual carefully.
But I don’t think I’ll bother with the Litch one. God knows what it was following, but it wasn’t anything I pointed it at
If there’s any interest I’ll post more when I warm up…
The limiting factor isn’t the app, its the tech.
Its the reason DJI didn’t include either on the FlyApp for the Mini 2
I’m sure it’s a hard thing to do - but it really does work well in Maven.
Ps I have no connection with the app or its author. Nobody is sending me a free mini 4 pro for my review.
Sadly…
Shame because that has active track 360 and is great
